I recently fresh installed winXP home on my P3 733MHz with a GF2MX400 in it. My PC slow down tremendously just like previously I was using win98 with active desktop on. So, I disabled the active desktop on my winXP. Yet it is still slow. Even the screensaver (Aquarium) is slow. It is smooth for about a second or 2 then paused for a while then moves agian for a second or 2. I've also disble some of the services which is not required and make sure there is no background application running. Even in games like Hot pursuit2 where they show the intro, Fraps measured about 45fps but I can see a lot of frames was skipped. So, any idea what I should do about it to make it smooth?

Okay, I think I need to let you guys know the specs:

Pentium3 733MHz
384MB PC133 SDRAM
20GB Maxtor 7200rpm HDD
Creative SB Live! Value sound card
64MB MSI GeForce2 MX400
Via Apollo Pro 133 chipset mobo

What do you suggest to tweak on the windows to make it run faster?

Did you install any drivers afterwards? And if so, what order did you install them in? If not, you should install the motherboard chipset drivers from the manufacturer. Install the drivers in this order:

Motherboard
Sound Card
Graphics Card

Yeap...that's the order I installed the drivers. I got the version 4.43 of via 4 in 1 and I installed the det 28.32 for my GF cos the rest of the drivers did not give good frame rates especially those det 40.xx (But these give good results for my GF4 Ti4200). Yet any of the detonator drivers give jerking graphics.

Blasted...I'm stumped. I was thinking overriding the Direct3D refresh rates with the dxdiag tool, but I'm not sure if that'll work. Wanna ask in my forums? Some of the regulars in there might know.

Sorry I don't know. I feel frustrated now. :frown:
