I was planning on share my cable internet connection, using two network cards on the main computer, one connected to the cable modem, and the other connected to a hub, connected to other comps. Main computer would run NAT software.

My friend says I don't need a second network card, and just to hook a switch up to the cable modem and everything else up to the switch. I do not see how this could possibly work... This is not a linksys router w/ an integrated 4 port switch, it's just a standalone switch.

Unless your ISP provides you with enough IPs for all your computers, you'll need a router. A switch is basically the same as a hub in terms of IP usage; it only handles the data going through better.

Some Internet sharing software like Sygate allow you to hook everything to the switch.

There is what they say on their website.

Sygate Home Network makes it easier than ever for you to maximize your existing hardware investment with the introduction of Sygate OneNIC technology. OneNIC technology significantly simplifies the process of installing your shared Internet connection by eliminating the need to install a second Network Interface Card (NIC). OneNIC is made possible by creating a software-based virtual NIC. The real NIC is used for connecting to the cable or DSL modem and the virtual NIC is used to communicate with the other computers in your network.

Oh yes, if you're using software like Sygate it would work. Sorry, assumed you wouldn't be installing any additional software.

There is software out there that will let you do this. Try one called "allAboard" you can download a free 30 day trial. A router is a bit better, but you may find this meets your need.

I'm a bit confused by your post, Ncogneto. Can you explain it a bit more?
