I used a student liscence for windows vista, which I obtained from my school. I have recently tried to upgrade to windows seven. I purchased the Home Preium upgrade vershion. First I tried to install the operating system when windows was booted up. After the first restart the sceen goes black at about 30% of what I believe to be the extraking files process. I can not realy remember exactly what it was doing, but it was just after the very first restart. I retired a few times and the same proplem kept happing. A black screen with the words "no signal" displayed on my monitor. I would have to a do a hard restart every time. When this did not work I rebooted my machine and tried to boot from disc. Upon doing this I would get as far as the windows seven splash screen ( see here). Then the screen would go black. Ive gone through this several times trying both the 64 bit disc and the 32 bit. I have also tried letting the computer go for a while " up to two hours", but nothing the screen remains black. The computer is on. I can hear the fans, but there disc drive is not spinning or any of the hard drives. I have also tried to reinstall vista from the boot disc and the same exact problem happens. I get to a vista splash screen and then the screen goes black. On a few side notes I was looking around in the bios today checking my boot priorities and some other options and the screen went black and I had to do a hard restart and got a blue screen error after the restart. I have also been trying to play the Star Craft 2 beta and my computer will shut down in the middle of a game at the about the same time every time. When i restart the computer i get a blue screen eror. Im sorry but I did not write down the error. I have tried using only one stick of memory and kept getting the same problems with both sticks. Well that is about the extent of my problem. I would greatly appreciate any ideas

I'm thinking it could be an issue with the graphics card, as I had a similar issue with a bad 4850x2 awhile back. Does your motherboard have on board graphics? If so, remove your dedicated graphics card and hook up to the on board graphics and try installing windows again.

Unfortunately I do not have on board graphics. I will see if I can borrow a PCI express card from a friend and let you know how it turns out.

It is a bad idea to install Windows 7 as an upgrade to an old instillation of Vista as there are a number of drivers and programs that will stop a successful install, so installing a fresh install of Vista and then upgrading to Windows 7 is the way to go as well as being much much quicker.
The fact that your screen goes black when you are in the Bios and that you are getting blue screens means that you are having problems with your memory but the fact that running with only one stick makes no difference and I assume that you have set all of the BIOS settings to default and are not overclocking any component makes me think that your power supply has gone faulty, test by substitution your power supply.

I had a similar problem with my new build.

I have 1333 DDR3, and I had to set the BIOS to default for the memory to run at a lower speed. After the install I set back to 1333 and it is been running stable.

Well I reset my bios to default. Rebooted my system and put in the win 7 disc. This time I was able to get past the splash screen and saw the install options. Right I was about to click next the screen went black. I could still hear my fans I unhooked my monitor and re-hooked it up, but nothing happened the screen stayed black. I tried to open the DVD rom just to see what would happen, and I was able to open and close the drive. The screen still remained black and nothing changed. I tried to boot from the disk a couple of more times but after each restart the screen would go black sooner than before.


I would try to swap out my power supplies but the only other two I have access to are 450 watts. I'm not sure if they are big enough for my system.

I was also wondering if there were power options in my BIOs I could change, such as the suspend setting. Also I am able to boot my computer up from my hard drives and everything runs fine. I have not really tried running any applications while booted up except for Firefox.
