Hi there,

Since you are going to be using your laptop for school, I recommend getting one that will allow you to multi-task (plenty of RAM and a fast processor). Sufficient hard drive space is also important and make sure it is not too heavy to you can carry it back and forth to class! A good choice is the Dell Studio 15. It has a fast processor, 4 GB of RAM, and 500 GB of hard drive space. Plus, it has a nice sized 15.6" screen but only weighs 5.5 lbs.

Cheers,

I would not recommend Dell or HP either... I had both and constantly there is something wrong... Dell keeps breaking ... HP got burned graphics.
I dont want you to think it happens with every laptop from those brands but I would recommend Toshiba and Vaio for their reliability.

You really need something with a long lasting battery. dual core processor, though you don't really need a ton of power unless you're doing 3d modelling or video editting or something like that in school. I'd recommend something like Acer's UL80vt, which has a claimed 11.5 hour battery, 14in screen, and a dual core ULV processor. and the optimus switchable graphics mean good HD video playback.

core i3-330UM
4GB RAM

with the extra budget, you could throw in a 120GB SSD...

I would recommend against going to less than 13.3in laptop if you'll be typing on it all day. even 13.3's are a little cramped if you have broad shoulders.
