I see that the retail box of the 3500+ Venice costs $220, but I can't seem to find any OEM venice cores for cheaper? I wanted to get an XP-90 + Artic Silver 5 TIM... and plan on OC'ing... so don't want to pay for a warranty I'm about to void and a stock HSF I'm not going to use...

Anywhere to find a cheaper OEM chip for the Venice cores?

Amd only lists them as PIB, so oem are rare.
Before you go dropping a bundle on uber cooling, give the stock hsf a go. You can probably get to 2.5, or better on it. Since this is a new experience for you, practice with the stock setup for a while. You may find it's all you need.
Unless you get serious with overvolting, you haven't really blown the warranty. If the chip fails at any reasonable voltage, it was a flaw in the chip, so Amd should honour the warranty. It's people who shoot 3.5v to the mem controler, or 1.85 to the chip , then cry for a replacement who pi$$ me off. BTW, I have yet to have an AMD chip fail, and I've OCed hundreds, though many only by 10%. Guess I always want something for nothing.

Endyen - thanks a ton for the helpful feedback.

I was only planning on OC'ing this one 10%, from 2200mhz to 2420mhz - this would bring my 3500+ to the equivalent of a 4000+ is that right?

Also, with that OC - I shouldn't have to change voltage settings for the CPU/RAM or anything, or the Mem ratio's or what not... (using pc3200 OCZ platinum RAM)? Should it be as easy as just changing the HTT from 200 to 220 and calling it good? I hope!

For a small overclock like that, you recommend just sticking with the retail HSF? If I do that I'll still be running perfectly cool, no sweat, with a 220mhz overclock (20mhz on the HTT, again 200 to 220)?

Thanks again!

My little s939 3200 (2ghz) is doing 2.45ghz, with stock cooler and voltage, no problem. I did have to lower the HT multiplier to 4X, but that makes no difference to performance.
I am using pc3200, so I use a ram divider, but good ram should handle 220 no sweat.
That rig folds 24/7. I reboot it every week or so, just to keep xp honest. Temps stay around 50c.

when you say good ram should handle 220 no sweat, do you mean good pc3200 ram (ie that OCZ platinum) or faster RAM ie pc4000?

50c? Isn't that a bit hot for an idle temp? I heard you should be closer to the mid-upper 40's under full load...

Oh, it's 37 at idle, I think, it's been a while. 50 is @ 100% load while running folding@home always. Good pc3200 should be able to do 220 (I have some samsung TCCCs doing just that @ 2.5,3,3,8 and it cost less than $100 a gig) but if you are not too sure how high you want to OC, pc4000 is nice.

I've sold hundreds of K6-2 systems at 2.8v core! After figuring out they could handle it, looking at the price of Pentium MMX processors, etc, I decided it was worth the risk. So all those Pentium systems that "couldn't" be upgraded cheaply...were. None failed.

Cool, sounds good. Hey what case are you using? The Antec p180, from what I read, does a better job than normal keep things air-cooled due to the PSU isolation and 2 exhaust fans by the CPU.

So if I set HTT multiplier to 4 (I read it before, could you quickly remind me what that does... 220x4 = 880-HTT instead of 200x5 = 1000-HTT... is that right?), and then just set the HTT to 220 (Which would move the RAM from 200 to 220) I should be set? And I won't have to change RAM timings or voltage or anything with the RAM I'm using?

So am I missing anything, or is it really just that easy to just change those couple settings, test it for stability/cooling and call it good? Is that virtually 4000+ performance (I hear the 512k vs 1mb cache makes hardly any difference... does that hold true even when OC'ing?)

Thanks again, I really appreciate it all the help.

I have a cheap generic case hidden somewhere under a pile of manuals beside my desk. I plunked a good enermax psu, an intake and an extra exhaust fan in it.
What you said about OCing sounds about right. You should leave it running something like folding@home for a day or two, before you OC, to give the electrical pathways a chance to patina. (burnin). You might try an intermediate OC first, like 210, but with a minor OC like 10% it probably wont be a problem.
Make sure you know how to reset the bios, just in case.

So, even though venice has 512k, when OC'ing it to 2.4 is that still virtually 4000+ performance (I hear the 512k vs 1mb cache makes hardly any difference... does that hold true even when OC'ing?)

Look at the s754 3200s. The s754 has 200mhz more speed (newcastle) or 256 more cache (clawhammer). The newcastle was 5% faster, for most things. Giving 256k more cache a value of 100mhz would have been more correct.
For Danny's comparison he is saying that a 10% higher memory bandwidth is = to the added cache. That is not quite true, but it's going to be close.

whoops i meant more like 200mhz = 512mb haha
for the 2.2 1mb clawhammer 3400+ and the 2.4 512kb newcastle 3400+

wait, so bringing it from 2.2 w/512k to 2.4 w/512k is going to be the equivalent of a 2.2 w/1mb cahce? Or is it going to be close to a 2.4 w/1mb cache?

To answer the questions directly: (respectively)

A little faster than 2.2/1mb.
Not as fast as 2.4/1mb.

2.2/512 is not as fast as 2.2/1024.
2.4/512 is faster than 2.2/1024.
2.4/1024 is not as fast as 2.6/512.

Does that clear it up a little?

Mike.

Ah yes but 2400 with 512 and 220 mem bus ~ 2400 w 1024 @ 200 mem bus. On large cache progs, of course the extra cache helps, but most progs will gain more from extra memory bandwidth.
