I did replace the cartridge with a new one HP 940 XL but the same message keeps appearing whenever I try to print

OK, did you remove the new cartridge and make sure there is not a piece of tape on the electrical contacts? You might also want to clean the contacts inside the printer while you have the cartridge out. A cotton swab with some rubbing alcohol works fine.

If that does not work, you might have a defective cartridge. They are rare, but I recently had a defective HP cartridge.
