I recently upgraded my cpu from an Athlon 550 to a 900 (classic). What was a very stable system will not run Quake 3, UT or DVD films without freezing. I thought it was a temp problem but I am running at about 100 F. This is a little cooler than the 550 was. Does anyone have any idea what my problem might be or where to look ?
I actually figured out what it was, I manually diabled AGP 4X in the bios and system hasn't misbehaved at all since.
Just in case someone else may have a similar problem here are the specs..
Athlon Classic 900
Biostar M7KE (KX 133)
Hercules GeForce 2MX (6.18)
3 Sticks Generic PC 100 (128 total)
Soudblaster Live Value
Windows 98
You are using GENERIC ram with your athlon? Not good. These processors are VERY sensitive to the quality of your memory, re-post if you have problems or if it works completly stable for that matter, I'd be interested. With PC100 prices at $50 for 128 megs, I'm tempted to buy generic but I think I'll pay in the end if i do.
