First a disclaimer: I no longer use Dell. Second, if you hate Dell you may

Yeah, I subscribe to three magazines that rate the major PC manufacturers on
at least a yearly basis: PC Magazine, PC World and Consumer Reports. All
three, year after year, rate Dell as a reliable brand along with, if my
memory is serving me correctly, IBM and Apple. A point of interest: ALL
THREE report that Dell's tech support has declined in the last couple of
years BUT that Dell is still building reliable machines.

Smart Computing had a huge report on Tech Support in this months issue and
Dell was second to Alienware for the PC makers.

Does Alienware still use US tech support? That might be a key.

While Dell's desktops are made in the USA, the notebooks are
manufactured offshore. I don't know if that is what is causing the
dismal reliability ratings of the notebooks, but it is suspicious.

The back of my Dimension 2400 desktop says "Made in China".
I have not seen any "Made in USA" desktops in many years.

Aren't most (if not all) laptops made in Asia (including other
manufacturers)?

Dell's notebook computers are assembled in Ireland, and the desktop
computers are assembled in the USA. Where the individual parts come
from varies, but a lot of them come from Asia.

What I understood is that only government purchased notebooks come from the
UK; the remainder from Malaysia or China for the rest of us.
This is allegedly due to some U.S. government requirement with regard to
labor and origins....
