I just downloaded windows 8. I read that the file will download as a windows architecture that is interchangeable between x86 and x64. However the system booted up as a 32 bit because i was previously on a 32 bit system. Is there anyway to switch to windows 8 64 bit from windows 8 32 bit?

Did you read the previous posts? You will need to do a clean install of Windows 8 to get the 64 bit version. You can't upgrade the OS to the 64 bit version without doing a clean install.

can you please explain to me how you do that step by step? I have windows 32 bit on a USB drive. I want to know is there a way to change from windows 8 32 bit to 64 bit without rebuying the $120 OS.

What is a clean boot? I thought that was where you boot from a HD that is completely erased. I did that via custom boot in the windows 8 install process but the machine is still running 32 bit.

I would like to know this too. I reinstalled the software but it didn't give me the option of 64bit..so it re installed as a 32bit again. where can I find the option of switching it to a 64bit durring the installation process?

You clearly downloaded and installed a 32-bit software. Download the 64-bit software (Don't ask us where to get that - go get it from the vendor you purchased from). Install. If your hardware isn't compatible the system will tell you.

Think logically and you will prevail

QUESTION
do I need to completely format the hard drive to change windows from 32 bit to 64 bit......or just the partition in which I installed the windows previously.
