I have been getting low-ink message for quite a while, yesterday I got following message while printing:
<font color=blue>Ink Has run out
Replace the ink.....(instructions)
You can continue printing under ink out condition by pressing RESUME button. Replace the empty ink tank immediately after printing. The printer may be damaged if printing is continued under ink out condition.
The following ink tanks have been run out (name of ink tank)</font color=blue>
I ignored the message, and continued printing. After printing ~70 more pages, I got that "ink has run out" message again. This time I opened the cover and pulled out the reported tank. Since the ink tank was transparent, I could see how much ink was left in the tank. The tank was completely empty, only 3-4 drops were sticking on the tank wall. I put back the empty tank, and continued printing again. It still printed 45 pages, and no "ink has run out" message appeared between these 45 pages!
And how can <i>the printer may be damaged if printing is continued under ink out condition</i>?! I guess it may not print correctly or print nothing when the tank becomes 100% empty, but damaging printer?? How it can be possible?
(btw, it was not low ink level message, real "ink has run out" message. I had been getting "low ink level" for some days.

Well, when you get everything else for free, I know it's an expense to actually have to buy an ink cartridge..... They only last so long, you know....... [shrug]

LOL.
Actually I already have a replacement cartridge, just don't want to install it untill the old one gets 100% finished.

The printing head actually heat up ink to create bubbles that explode and spray on paper.. or something like this, for printing.. So maybe that running low ink can cook what remain and clog the tiny ink holes... meaning a new print head to replace the clogged one ..

Are you sure?

<font color=orange><b><A HREF="http://www.mozilla.org/products/firefox" target="_new">Rediscover the web</A></b></font color=orange>
Yes! That is why I like HP printers, the print head is replaced every time with cartridge.

Trouble with HP is, it's so expensive per print, to use...

I got that from googling..<A HREF="http://computer.howstuffworks.com/inkjet-printer3.htm" target="_new"> heat vs vibration for inkjet printers</A> and that state that Canon printer use heat to boil ink that got spread on paper.. so if there is not enough ink, I can think about the thinner layer being cook inside the small hole and then, blocking it completly....
<font color=red>Sig space for rent. make your offer.</font color=red>
Canon heads can be replaced when needed too. So, Canon cartridges cost about half the price for HP, and at long term, it could make up head replacement.

Sunday paper had the Canon ip 5000 on sale for $157, do you think that is agood deal?
Guns***Scotch***Country Music
I've never paid anywhere near that for a printer.... I usually stay below $100...
They had the 4000 @ Circuit City for $109, in yesterdays paper here...

Thanks for your input, but I was actually looking forward to hear about some practical experience with this kind of situation.

You can have the "pratical experience" with your printer and share it with us... keep printing with your old cartridge..

I'm not interested in risking $$ print head for saving few cents

You sure seem to be intrested in risking a new printer though.......
I agree with Pat on this one...

iP5000 is not worth the extra money. All it does more is reduced picolitre inkjets. In reality, that amounts to a cent every photo prints. It's pointless.
Go for the iP4000 if it's priced way below 130$. 2 black cartridges, photo dedicated one, plus dual-sided printing.

I know of no printer that prints on such film. I know of scanners that do that, but not printing slides. I am assuming you need transparents? If that's the case, then you need to find slide-format transparents that are inkjet compatible.

They make mylar, a transparent film that you can print on. I use Mylar film quite a bit to print drawings on.

Yea!! Print from slides...you youngsters never seen a 35mm slide?
<font color=red>GO BUCKS!</font color=red>
To print from slides, you need a high res scanner and printer. Easy. My HP Scanjet has a slide adapter to make it easier and enlarge slide for better scanning.

<font color=red>GO BUCKS!</font color=red>
Today, most $100 printers will work fine. Mine is not a current model, it is the HP Scanjet 6350 and has slide adapter and 50 sheet automatic paper tray. About 6 years ago, I paid $500 for it.

Sounds like something Eden would be good at.
I'm the good time that was had by all
| Quote : I know of scanners that do that, but not printing slides. |
Yeah that's it, I said that too.
If he wants a multifunction printer with an automatic document feeder for scanning, above all stay clear of Lexmark. But definitely look at the PiXMA 700 serie from Canon. Those MFPs are freakin' nice.
For individual scanners with adapters, there are many below 100$ that offer slide adapters. HP is good for providing them at affordable prices. Check out the 3670 and 4070 from them.
