I always ask for pictures - good, close-up ones of any area I suspect.
There's just too many opinions on what is "new condition" or what is an
acceptable flaw. If that's not possible, just bid accordingly.

If an eBay seller can't be bothered to respond fully to legitimate
questions, you should take your business elsewhere. I once asked a
seller if there was any warping to a NOS playfield he was selling, and
in response he sent me the pic below:

I agree a seller should be able to give out more information on
request. Especially on a "sensitive" item like a playfield. I have
also had some questions from prospective buyers that have made me
wonder what planet they are from.
Example. This is from one of my auctions, Mars God Of War drop targets.
Hi, I would like to know if you could measure your drop targets. If I
buy them would you refund my money if they are not the same shade of
color red as the ones on my game.
Example. This was an auction I had for Caveman parts.
Hello, I was interested to know if I win your pop bumper caps would you
purchase my old set or give me credit for them towards the purchase
price. They are badly scratched.
Now the Mars targets I just said Ok, I'll measure them, no problem.
The refund for color shade was interesting. I don't think so.
The other auction for the Caveman parts just blew mw away. My thought
was, "Why don't I just give them to you and pay the postage as well.
Then I'll send you a check for $1000. I hope you'll give me good
feedback and be happy. Then I'll pay the return shipping on your old
set of bumper caps and go out behind the shed and stick them where the
sun don't shine".
So, you get both sides of the coin. A good question that really should
be answered, and some questions that should be answered with a death
ray.

Todd had a "live" one like this last year that's still one of my faves:
