Integrated vs Stand-alone graphics chipsets

Hi,

I was wondering if there is a large amount of differences in performance terms between the two kinds.

I'm planning on getting a Toshiba A10-01M7L and it has an integrated Intel 852GM chipsets which includes the graphics as well. Also uses shared memory (16-64MB). It comes with a P4 2.2 and 256MB ram.

If I were to use this for some gaming, would it be ok or would the graphics be jerkish?

Thanks in advance for any info.

Cheers,
Alf

Well it depends on what games. But yes: you would have to run all your games at the lowest resolution and detail levels - then they might play respectably. Don't expect more than 1500 3DMarks out of that chipset though.

Thanks for the reply RaPTuRe.

Would it help if I were to double the system memory? I know this would not be the case for desktops but I don't know anything when it comes to laptops.

Edit:
I have a Matrox G400 card on my desktop and I found an old review saying it had 4119 3DMark 99 MAX score. Can I take that to mean that the Intel 852GM chip has less than half the frame rate of the G400?

Sorry to ask about what seems to be a stupid question, but I have no idea when it comes to 3DMark scores.
Edited by Alf on 09/03/03 09:33 AM.
