So that shows that a laptop can consume as much electricity as a desktop?

If equipped with a desktop processor and the SLI 480M's, then yes. However, consumption drops by a lot when you use a mobile processor and only one of the GPUs.

so having a mid range laptop will save you a lot more money on electricity, right

I don't know about a lot, but the AvaDirect W880 consumes 210 watts less at full load. The equivalent of almost 4 x 60 watt light bulbs. The difference at idle is not nearly as drastic, but there will still be some saving on power. Also, keep in mind that the laptop will not perform to the same level as a desktop. Laptop parts are just generally less powerful.
