Hi, my friend's computer recently bite the dust and he needs a new laptop. He's a casual gamer (WOW and SC) and he is looking for a laptop that can play these games well. Just thought I should hop on tom's to get some of your guys' input.

the budget is 1300 dollars tops, and the notebook should be no larger than 15 inch. He doesn't really care for battery life. A decent amount of hard disk storage is good (~200GB and no need for SSDs), with 4GB ddr3 ram. A normal DVD ROM is good for an optical drive. and he doesn't have any brand preference.

He lives in USA, so any computer stores over here or any deals online would be much appreciated.

Thanks for the quick responses.

They both look pretty decent but Sager and Asus are notorious for heating issues. They pack great components into an okay motherboard base and then dont work on the heating issues (terrible customer service) and you eventually are stuck working on a computer thats all busted up.

What are your guy's opinion on HP or Dell laptops?

I'm going to recommend the HP ENVY 14. I'm looking at it myself and it sounds like you're looking for laptop with similar specs. I will be getting the beats edition though for about $100 more, but it looks sick and comes with the Beats by Dr. Dre so it's actually the better buy.

Actually Sager 8690 has a great cooling system and XoticPC has a great customer service
http://www.notebookreview.com/default.asp?newsID=5406&p...
"The cooling system is the foundation of any gaming notebook. The NP8690 has one of the most effective cooling systems we have seen to date. Hot air is exhausted by two large fans through oversized vents on the back of the chassis; the copper heatsinks are visible within. Even under full load for extended periods, the surfaces of this notebook including the bottom do not get more than lukewarm. The noise factor is surprisingly low as well; the fans are audible at idle but unnoticeable. Under full load the fans ramp up but do not have an annoying whine; it mostly sounds like a rush of air. All internal components are kept well within their maximum rated temperatures."

Stay away from HP. They have heating issues as well and tend to overheat to the point of damaging the motherboard.

@buwish, I read mixed reviews about HP before too, but it just seems like heating is always an issue with laptops of any brand in general. One of my friend bought a sager laptop a couple years back, and he had to get a notebook fan for his because it never fails to overheat without one.

I don't know about your friend's laptop, but Sager has improved their cooling solutions with the new 15" and 17" models.

Just to add to your confusion: Vaio, Asus, Dell XPS. Alienware is overrated.

I think you should check which one has the best GPU for your budget. Just this one factor will help filter lots of bad laptops out. I can't believe Lenovo still believes in Intel GMA (these really bad integrated graphics GPU).

What bugs me is this display resolution of 1366x768?!! ...not to mention laptops that still come with 2GB RAM and hard-drive with speed of 5400rpm. I mean, who are they kidding!

I think you can go to HP Home Store, choose your prefer products and apply a coupon code   . You can save a lot of money with that. This is my favourite HP Coupon website. Good luck to you !
