Bend, OR (AHN) – Cazz Altomare is a little too affectionate for administrators at Sky View Middle School. The 14-year old got detention for a hug she gave her boyfriend.
District spokesperson Laurie Gould says, "It's not like we are the hug Nazis. Kids hug, they hug hello and they hug goodbye, but if you take it farther, you make people uncomfortable."
Apparently Cazz had been warned that her lingering hugs were in violation of school policy, but chose to ignore the rule.
Her mother is incensed saying, "I'm trying to understand what's wrong with a hug.” Leslee Swanson says students should not "blindly accept these fundamental rights being taken away from them,"
Officials says kids are allowed quick “hello and goodbye hugs”, but nothing protracted.
All middle schools in the Bend-La Pine district regulate public displays of affection, including holding hands and hugs.
One principal says, "Really, all we're trying to do is create an environment that's focused on learning, and learning proper manners is part of that."
Many students have expressed disagreement with the policies.
I saw this on GMA, and the Hug lasted 3 seconds and was a non-sexual freindly hug. The mother supports her daughter and went with her to detention.
Apparently, momentary breif hugs are allowed, but prolonged hugs are not and the duration is subjective.

Weird. Here my guys friends hug each other a lot, I do too. I have a few who really do it seriously, not just for humor.
And some of course, enjoy doing a grope and laughing about it. Teehee, that's modern society...

Despite being hungover to the shithouse, I felt compelled to agree with Rich: "Where is the Love, Baby!".
Its admirable that the principal wishes to create a learning environment that is conducive to learning, and what, do they say, is one of the most beneficial environments for a young child or teen to learn the correct and civil behaviours: a loving one.
Lets not confuse sex and love here either; two young people hugging for a period of three seconds is fair enough to me - its when they start porking in the toilets that we all should be concerned - and justly so.
As a young teen I grew up in a rough-neck high school that was full of 'young boys' trying to act like men: chests out; physical sport loving; girl teasing; emotion suppressing; booze drinking - overall we did not have a clue about the world and fitting in was a nightmare.
I would encourage young boys to not suppress their emotions, to respect female contact [hugs], to enjoy their youth without falling for the traps that 'youth guru marketers' etc set for them. Young boys pine to be men - and to hide what's true and positive or to teach 1950's masculinity is obsolete in my opinion.
With my head pounding I had better stop here. Lets not create a bunch of pansies but lets not create little tin soldiers either: the fragility of youth is only amplified in adulthood if just, right and ethical behaviours are not learned young.

Chaps, it just occurred to me that the term 'pansy' is typically an ambiguous one and one that may be misconstrued as an insult against homosexual men - please, let me assure you, it is not and I most certainly do not mean it to be.
By 'a bunch of pansies' I simple mean that I do not wish to see our young teen boys being afraid of their inherent testosterone-fuelled masculinity or their sexuality in general - whether they choose a hetrosexual or homosexual life is entirely up to them and its a choice I would not discriminate against.

While the rest of your post was very well said, I could not quite grasp your position based on this

You give props to the principal but later on talk about how they should make distinctions between hugging and actually being perverted or excessive in sexual conduct.

Did you not get enough hugs as a kid? I did not either.
I would take a hug over a drug anyday!

Yeah, Ed, I'm not the best at putting down clarifications on paper. I thought it was admirable that the principal of the school is focussed on creating a learning environment that is stable and rules based. While its a fine line between teens being overly amorous, I felt that the school had this one wrong. If, however, the teen had been getting overtly physical in other ways [porking in the toilets] then I believe the school has every right to suspend or give detention to students, pending the nature of their indiscretions of course.

Ah cool, then yeah I am now in agreement with all of your post.
