Only took me, oh, I dunno, many many, many years :p I played Adom when it
was first released, again a version or two later, and again when the
wilderness was added. I played pretty regularly past that point. Eventually,
the berserking monsters/uber jackals/crashes irritated me to the point of
quitting - that was a few years ago. I recently came back, decided to give
it a try again. And well, what do you know - victory!

Bizarrely, this is only my sixth character on this installation! I was
playing all random class/race/etc to refamiliarize myself with the game.
Apparently more stuck than I thought. .flg and comments follow. Oh, and
thanks to the regulars who answered my queries :) Ugly screenshot preserved
for spoiler space I suppose. I'll do a more narrative followup post in a
bit, basking in the warm glow of victory for now :)

Blessed Invisible Bloated Berserk
----------------------------------------------------------------------------
--

Seems like I finished at a bit of a low level? I was in the Mana Temple
below 30, I killed the boss and gained about three levels in one shot.
Gained another level on D50 while fighting back the hordes of chaos.

----------------------------------------------------------------------------
Background Information
----------------------------------------------------------------------------

Name: Glorin Race: male Dwarf Class: Healer
Eye color: green Hair color: black Complexion: brown
Height: 4' Weight: 163 pounds Scars: 4
Age: 88 (grown-up, 30 years of unnatural aging added in)
Star sign: Tree Birthday: 21/Tree (day 351 of the year)

YOUR HISTORY:
Your parents were poor people. They loved you and cared for you,
although you had to hunger more than once.
As a child you had to survive pretty harsh times since your parents
seemed to have run out of luck. Their wealth was ever-declining and times
were very hard.
During your youth you had a lot of fun playing with other kids of
your age. You always were a natural leader and the center of interest.
Your path was always clearly lying before you. You knew about your
destiny since your earliest years and fortunately your grandfather
supported your wishes. You managed to find a competent trainer and began
your studies.
You decided to become a Healer.

Healer was strange. The increased healing speed, was, by the time I acquired
it, pretty irrelevant. I suppose it might have served to save me some time
healing in ultra-corrupting areas, but as I blitzed my way through the last
parts of the CoC, that was a minimal benefit. Spending some time reading the
newsgroup revealed the ability to acquire virtually infinite !Ultra Healing,
which would have been mighty handy. Sadly, I had no access to the healer
dungeon (indeed, my choices at the beginning caused me massive grief later
in the game - see superurl:

Inventory
----------------------------------------------------------------------------
Total weight: 7046 stones Carrying capacity: 19003 stones

Head : uncursed eternium cap [+0, +6] [28s]
Are there any nifty or special helmets out there? I found the Mental
Stability and Water Breathing, think that was about it. Attempting to read a
blessed Scroll of Defense on this ashed it.

Neck : uncursed ankh [3s]
Wound up wearing this, as both of my Amulets of Free Action were destroyed.
I'm very uncomfortable without paralysis resist, so I played the game very
carefully around unknown opponent as I proceeded through the game. Even so,
I still nearly died to a stone ooze near the end of the game. Only my hp and
defenses saved me, and barely at that.

Body : uncursed ancient mummy wrapping [+1, +5] {Ap-8} [60s]
Very nice! Found lots of better armor, but the bonuses on this made me keep
it on for the whole game. Sort of silly...

Girdle : blessed girdle of carrying [+3, +0] [15s]
Also nice. It would appear Giant Strength is super rare, as I never found
one.

Cloak : uncursed cloak of defense [+3, +0] [20s]
Are there any special cloaks beyond defense/protection/invis? Lost several
of these along the way to various equipment destroying attacks.

Right Hand : blessed lead-filled mace "Big Punch" (+1, 8d5+3) [-6, +0]
Excellent weapon. The weight wasn't an issue at the time I acquired it, and
it was far better than Rolf's Companion (the only other arty weapon I
acquired early). Also better than the weapons I had found at the time.

Left Hand : blessed dwarven shield "Rolf's Saviour" (+2) [+9, +6][120s]
Was quite pleased to recieve this from the dwarven leader, I'm assuming it
had something to do with my alignment at the time of completion.

Right Ring : blessed ring of slaying (+8 melee damage, +6 missile damage)
These are nice, had never seen them before

Left Ring : uncursed ring of mental stability [+3, +1] {Le+4} [1s]
Also nice, swapped out another slaying ring for this to resist confusion in
case I swapped out Skullcrusher at an inopportune time

Bracers : blessed bracers of speed [+2, +2] (+4 spd) [10s]
Found and lost a lot of bracers throughout the game, kept getting destroyed
by various attacks.

Gauntlets : uncursed elemental gauntlets (-1, +0) [+0, +3] [10s]
Handy. If for no other reason than to save my rings from equipment
destruction.

Boots : blessed seven league boots [+2, +3] [30s]
Incredibly powerful. So much so that they seem borderline broken. Melee
combat is so risky, and these make ranged or spellcasting simplistic against
the bulk of the foes encountered. I can see why people use Wishes on these.

Missile weapon: blessed long bow of accuracy (+8, +2) [30s]
Was fortunate enough to acquire several nice bows and xbows, made sure to
train up my xbow skill when I found a good one in the Gremlin cave to at
least decent competency, which served me well.

Missiles : bundle of 2 uncursed arrows of construct slaying (+3, 1d6+3)

Tool : heap of 50 blessed spenseweeds [100s]
After this game, I thoroughly understand why Herbalism is powerful.

----------------------------------------------------------------------------
Stuff
----------------------------------------------------------------------------

Total weight: 5814 stones Carrying capacity: 19003 stones

Helmets ('[')
uncursed crown of science [+4, +8] {Le+9} [65s]
Not sure why I hung on to this. I found so many artifacts there was no hope
of ever getting post-crowned due to my level, and I wasn't doing any tricky
Doomed wilderness scumming. Probably should have sold it.

blessed helm of water breathing (+1, +1) [+0, +1] [30s]
Visited Blup's mom, but numerous newsgroup comments on her strength made me
leery of engaging, so I just said hi and left.
uncursed helm of mental stability [+0, +3] {Le+1} [100s]
Backup in case I lost my other confusion resistance somehow. Probably should
have enchanted this, worn it, and put back on the other ring of slaying.

uncursed diadem of beauty [+0, +0] {Ap+4} [35s]
Armor ('[')
blessed Shirt of the Saints [+8, +4] {Le+2} [20s]
Kept this around for the confusion resist, but wound up not needing it.

uncursed crystal chain mail (-1, -3) [+0, +9] [620s]
Shields ('[')
uncursed large eternium shield (-1) [+11, +5] [54s]
Never did dual wield shields, but now that I think about it, I absolutely
should have on the last level. It just seems incredibly silly to me...

uncursed medium adamantium shield [+6, -1] [72s]
Gauntlets ('[')
uncursed archery gloves (+0, +4) [+0, +2] [6s]
uncursed gauntlets (-2, +1) [+0, +3] [10s]
Girdles ('[')
uncursed girdle of carrying [+0, +0] [15s]
Boots ('[')
uncursed boots of speed [+3, +1] (+8 spd) [20s]
Never saw these before. Kept them in case I lost my 7LB.

uncursed eternium boots [+1, +5] [55s]
uncursed adamantium boots [+0, +4] [89s]

Necklaces (''')
heap of 3 uncursed amulets of light [9s]
blessed amulet of order [3s]
blessed necklace of rapid healing [2s]
uncursed amulet of greed [3s]
blessed amulet of petrification resistance [3s]
uncursed amulet of health [3s]
blessed amulet of balance [3s]
blessed amulet of protection from undead [3s]
uncursed amulet of protection from undead [3s]
uncursed necklace of rabies resistance [2s]
heap of 2 uncursed amulets of protection from constructs [6s]
uncursed amulet of protection +2 [3s]
uncursed amulet of defense +2 [3s]

Never found another 'Free action, and never found another AoLS after the one
I wished for to save Khel. That proved to be a wise decision, as I needed
those scrolls at the end of the game.

Bracers (',')
heap of 2 uncursed bracers of resistance [+0, +0] [20s]
uncursed bracers of speed [+0, +0] (+4 spd) [10s]

More backups for my inevitably destroyed bracers. Probably lost three or
four pairs of toughness.

One-handed weapons ('(')
heap of 5 uncursed pick axes (+0, 1d6+1) [375s]
uncursed pick axe (+2, 1d6+4) [75s]
blessed pick axe (+0, 1d6+1) [75s]
heap of 2 blessed broken pick axes (+0, 1d6+1) [150s]

I really, *really* should have done smithing, but I never found an Anvil :(

blessed rune-covered club "Skullcrusher" (+12, 3d6+2) [-3, +0] {St+4}
Super nice. I don't know the exact numbers, but I pulled this out over Big
Punch against humanoids, and it seemed to work quite well.

uncursed pick axe (+3, 1d6+1) [75s]
uncursed rabbit knife (+2, 1d3+4) [8s]
I think I had some vague idea of using this against battle bunnies? Didn't
need it at all, that level was easy.

uncursed adamantium dagger of penetration (+0, 1d4+5) [7s]
In theory for the Earth Temple, wound up just Big Punching everything.

uncursed ebony spear "Bugbiter" (+3, 4d7+3) [+1, +1] {Dx+3} [100s]
Haw. Loot from Thrhalrhlhsldherlhsxhehxhes the Ancient Cold Wyrm deep in the
CoC. I was Cold immune and had some dragonslaying ammo, so I figured why not
whack it. Dropped this prize.

uncursed large adamantium hammer (+0, 1d10+10) [89s]
Missile weapons ('}')
uncursed short bow (+4, +3) [20s]
uncursed sling of accuracy (+5, +1) [3s]
blessed light crossbow of accuracy (+8, +0) [70s]
blessed light crossbow of accuracy (+11, +0) [70s]
blessed light crossbow of accuracy (+11, +2) [70s]
uncursed light crossbow (+0, +3) [70s]
More backups. Always having backup weapons/armor around served me _very_
well, from Giant Slugs in Keethrax's lair to innumerable traps and vortices.

Missiles ('*')
[stuff]
Ran out of demonslaying Quarrels on the last level, simply could not fight
the Balors effectively without it. Wound up having to attempt to run away
from them frantically.

Tools (']')
heap of 12 uncursed bandages [24s]
heap of 3 uncursed thieves picks [15s]
heap of 5 uncursed torches [50s]
heap of 3 blessed fireproof blankets [30s]
heap of 2 uncursed holy symbols [10s]
heap of 3 uncursed hexagonal keys [3s]
heap of 3 uncursed small keys [3s]
blessed hexagonal key [1s]
blessed waterproof blanket [10s]
heap of 2 uncursed tiny keys [2s]
uncursed gibbering mouther figurine of wondrous power [25s]
Should have used this somewhere, but I was paranoid about adding Pets into
the mix, as I have not played with them, and the game was going well, so I
didn't want to introduce more 'oops' moments.

heap of 6 uncursed waterproof blankets [60s]
heap of 2 uncursed fireproof blankets [20s]
heap of 4 uncursed round keys [4s]
heap of 2 uncursed triangular keys [2s]

heap of 18 blessed sis [180s]
blessed plain blanket [10s]
heap of 28 uncursed sis [280s]
heap of 8 cursed sis [80s]
Glad I remembered these, almost left them behind, and wound up on the icy
level with only missiles.

Instruments ('{')
uncursed whistle [1s]
Rings ('=')
heap of 6 uncursed rings of cold resistance [6s]
uncursed ring of damage [1s]
blessed ring of damage [1s]
heap of 4 uncursed rings of acid resistance [4s]
blessed ring of cold resistance [1s]
blessed ring of the fish [1s]

uncursed ring of invisibility [1s]

heap of 3 uncursed rings of stun resistance [3s]
blessed ring of luck [1s]
uncursed ring of regeneration [1s]
blessed ring of the High Kings [+2, +3] [1s]
Utter hell to acquire!

blessed ring of fire resistance [1s]
uncursed ring of damage [1s]
heap of 2 uncursed wedding rings [2s]
uncursed ring of the fish [1s]
uncursed ring of luck [1s]
uncursed ring of teleport control [1s]
heap of 7 uncursed brass rings [7s]
uncursed ring of slaying (+4 melee damage, +6 missile damage) [1s]

I made some vague effort at stacking wands to transmute them with !exchange,
but it never netted me anything useful.

Wands ('\')
[wands]
Ran out of \Digging charges on the last level. Ran out of charges for just
about everything useful in fact. This was due in no small part to consuming
*many* potions of booze on a wand of wonder in a desperate attempt to
acquire the Ring of High Kings - which eventually worked, but it led to a
_very_ hairy moment on the final level, when I realized I couldn't use my
Wand of Destruction due to no charges. Finally tried dipping it into a
potion of boost mana, which worked, and I blasted the last lever and
hightailed it out of there :)

Potions ('!')
[potions]
I made better use of potions this game, utilizing Exchange to swap
attributes, then herbs to regain lost stats, blessed stat potions, blessed
stacks of scrolls etcetc. Fairly easy to do once you get rolling, but not
something I was always aware of during the early game.

Scrolls ('?')
blessed scroll of vermin control [2s]
uncursed scroll of gold detection [2s]
heap of 7 uncursed scrolls of darkness [14s]
heap of 5 uncursed scrolls of power [10s]
blessed scroll of increase melee damage [2s]
heap of 5 uncursed scrolls of increase melee damage [10s]
Never had these work. I guess Artifacts cannot be powered up? Prot/Def
failed on the Elemental Gauntlets also.

heap of 4 uncursed scrolls of balance [8s]
uncursed scroll of satiation [2s]
heap of 6 blessed scrolls of uncursing [12s]
heap of 3 uncursed scrolls of charging [6s]
blessed scroll of repair [2s]
blessed scroll of increase melee accuracy [2s]
heap of 2 uncursed scrolls of familiar summoning [4s]
uncursed scroll of vermin control [2s]
uncursed scroll of literacy check [2s]
Pointless?

uncursed scroll of increase melee accuracy [2s]
uncursed scroll of teleportation [2s]
heap of 5 uncursed scrolls of great identify [10s]
blessed scroll of magic mapping [2s]
heap of 2 uncursed scrolls of dark predictions [4s]
uncursed scroll of uncursing [2s]
heap of 2 uncursed scrolls of item destruction [4s]
heap of 2 uncursed blank scrolls [4s]
blessed scroll of satiation [2s]
heap of 3 blessed scrolls of identify [6s]
uncursed scroll of luck [2s]
What does this do?

Food ('%')
heap of 98 uncursed spenseweeds [196s]
heap of 36 blessed curaria mancox herbs [72s]
heap of 25 uncursed alraunia antidotes [50s]
heap of 20 blessed pepper petals [40s]
heap of 24 uncursed stomacemptia herbs [48s]
heap of 3 uncursed moss patches of mareilon [6s]
heap of 12 uncursed morgia roots [24s]
heap of 16 blessed stomafillia herbs [32s]
heap of 23 blessed moss patches of mareilon [46s]
heap of 20 blessed morgia roots [40s]
heap of 21 blessed stomacemptia herbs [42s]
uncursed lump of gelee royal [3s]
What is this for?

heap of 49 uncursed cooked lizards [147s]
Valuables ('$')
26366 gold pieces [263s]
Gems ('*')
uncursed crystal of health [1s]
Useful?

heap of 2 uncursed crystals of power [2s]
Doh - didn't realize I had these, could have used them on the last floor
after I read the bulk of my scrolls of power.

uncursed sapphire [1s]
uncursed worthless piece of red glass [1s]

Alertness ................ 73 (great) [+1]
Never seemed to want to increase.

Backstabbing .............100 (superb) [+1d3]
Really powerful with inherent invis. So much so that I was very reluctant to
attempt drinking from the remaining pools in Darkforge once I had acquired
this.

Climbing ................. 84 (great) [+1d5]
Never capped this, had been thinking about visiting the Rift with this
character, again to acquire a source of frost.

Concentration ............100 (superb) [+2d4]
Didn't do a lot of casting till the end of the game, though I guess Healers
are nominally a caster class.

Cooking .................. 25 (mediocre) [+3d5] (mr)
Never found a cooking kit. Lack of Food Preservation was a huge pain, to the
extent that I may pick races or classes more carefully to get it now that
I've finished once :)

Courage ..................100 (superb) [+1d5]
Detect traps .............100 (superb) [+1d3]
Find weakness ............100 (superb) [+1d5]
First aid ................100 (superb) [+2d4]
Gardening ................ 46 (fair) [+3d3]
This was a dumb, dumb, dumb, dumb choice. If I could have known how much
pain the lack of bridge building or frost would have caused me, I never
would have chosen this. As it was, I never used it. Is there any easy way to
acquire seeds? I never found more than a handful.

Haggling ................. 82 (great) [+2d4]

Metallurgy ............... 53 (good) [+2d4]
Mining ................... 71 (great) [+1]
Smithing ................. 49 (fair) [+3d3]
Wish I'd found an Anvil :(

Swimming ................. 78 (great) [+1d5]
Tactics ..................100 (superb) [+1]
Two weapon combat ........ 53 (good) [+2d4]
I read up a bit on TWC, but it seems that you always pay an energy premium
to utilize it, and the loss of DV seems dangerous, though you do get some DV
bonus from dual wielding? Curious about this, I might like to try a few dual
wielding characters. Dual wielding one handed artifacts seems rather potent.
Any comments?

----------------------------------------------------------------------------
Spells
----------------------------------------------------------------------------

Burning Hands : 2, 15pp (Effectivity: +0)
These were all various silly gifts from massive \WoW zapping

Calm Monster : 1261, 8pp (Effectivity: +0)
Never used this, handy?

Cure Disease : 1261, 8pp (Effectivity: +0)
Cure Light Wounds: 1761, 5pp (Effectivity: +0)
Darkness : 368, 4pp (Effectivity: +2)
Very powerful. Almost died to a Doppleganger King because I didn't cast
this. I might have used it more, but as it was, I'd mostly use it to escape
occasionally, or suppress some creatures. I don't know exactly what it does
and does not work on, but covering up traps and potentially unmapped areas
in darkness wasn't something I would do lightly.

Disarm Trap : 1, 19pp (Effectivity: +0)
Fire Bolt : 6, 19pp (Effectivity: +2)
Invisibility : 11, 18pp (Effectivity: +0)
Knock : 7, 23pp (Effectivity: +0)
Light : 1043, 2pp (Effectivity: +7)
Lightning Ball : 8, 57pp (Effectivity: +0)
Magic Missile : 512, 7pp (Effectivity: +6)
Nice. Didn't seem powerful enough to take on main targets, but it didn't
wipe out stuff on the ground, and I could bounce it around a lot to hit
roomfulls of critters.
Revelation : 7, 63pp (Effectivity: +0)
Wish I'd acquired this earlier. Was really wanting to know my intrinsics
while doing pools in Darkforge.

Scare Monster : 7, 23pp (Effectivity: +0)
Useful?

Slow Monster : 277, 7pp (Effectivity: +1)
This seemed like it would be handy, but most stuff seemed to resist it.
Guess I should have powered up its effectivity more.

Slow Poison : 2307, 6pp (Effectivity: +0)
Strength of Atlas: 16, 18pp (Effectivity: +0)
Summon Monsters : 637, 30pp (Effectivity: +1)
Teleportation : 194, 21pp (Effectivity: +6)
Very powerful.
Web : 873, 12pp (Effectivity: +3)
Surprised this worked on the Quickling King/Queen - only way I was able to
take them out. Even in Darkness they were still dangerous.
Wish : 13, 5610pp (Effectivity: +0)
Hah.

----------------------------------------------------------------------------
His further life:
----------------------------------------------------------------------------

After he leaves the Drakalor Chain he is welcomed by his people with great
honors. They acknowledge his noble deeds, his valor, his cunning and his
great skills that helped to prevent the complete destruction of the world he
knows. He is crowned to be the king of all dwarves and lives a long and
prosperous life full of love, happiness and pleasure.

Cleansed myself with the White Unicorn on the way out, lived happily ever
after :)

----------------------------------------------------------------------------
His achievements during his adventures:
----------------------------------------------------------------------------

Glorin, the dwarven healer, saved the world with his brave efforts and
became a great ruler while saving himself 21 times.
He scored 7298728 points and advanced to level 33.
He survived for 0 years, 224 days, 5 hours, 2 minutes and 56 seconds (172237
turns).
Glorin visited 113 places.
His strength score was modified by +24 during his career.
His learning score was modified by +2 during his career.
His willpower score was modified by +4 during his career.
His dexterity score was modified by +4 during his career.

His charisma score was modified by -9 during his career.
His appearance score was modified by +1 during his career.
His mana score was modified by +7 during his career.

He was unnaturally aged by 30 years.
He was the champion of the arena.
He made a little water dragon very happy.
He saved Khelavaster from certain death.
He left the Drakalor Chain after completing his quest and became a great
leader and famous hero.
8557 monsters perished under his attacks.
The following 27 artifacts were generated during his adventure:
the si
the dwarven rune axe "Rolf's Companion"
the scythe of corruption "Moon Sickle"
the golden gladius "Death's Sting"
the dwarven shield "Rolf's Saviour"
the Chaos Orb of Elemental Water
the Chaos Orb of Elemental Air
the Chaos Orb of Elemental Fire
the Chaos Orb of Elemental Earth
the obsidian quarrel "Thunderstroke"

the black torc
the rune-covered club "Skullcrusher"
the Shirt of the Saints
the Chaos Orb of Elemental Mana

the fine leather armor "Nature's Companion"
Missed this

the rune-covered heavy mace "Purifier"
And this. I suspect these were generated on my mad rush down through the
CoC, where I was highly nervous, and mostly just tried to find the stairs
down and keep moving. I really didn't want to lose this character to a silly
vault or boss critter.

Congratulations. Somehow I knew you would pull it through.
I simply downgraded to 1.0.0. Sadly and ironically it
contains far less bugs than the later versions.

Killing the two wyrms, the catlord, the water dragon and
the casino shopkeeper would have added 7-10 levels.
However time concerns would have made that very
dangerous... apart from the obvious danger of the monsters
themselves.

The gardening skill is not really that useful comparison.
The heal other skill used on pets can generate a lot of
PoUHs which can be a lifesaver.

Ugh! Crowns of regeneration. And crowns for immunities
(where the lightning crown adds speed as an extra bonus!)
All of these are smithable.

Calm monster on Coward.

Not unusual. It is a good piece of armor allthough the
DV/PV bonus is low.

They are. And usually wished for.

No. And I also always loose heaps of cloaks. Note that
hooded cloaks help prevent water damage AND lessen the
equipment destruction of certain traps.

I have never liked it. No special attack bonus or
anything.

A neat piece, but why didn't you use Rolfs Companion as
weapon? The two together gives a nice bonus.

High DL before they are generated. And pretty rare. +8/+6
is a nice one. Good find.

Yep. These are marvels.

I usually wind up with smithed up bracers of regeneration
if I don't find BoW.

> Gauntlets : uncursed elemental gauntlets (-1, +0)

Very handy. Especially if you use the Mana Orb.

Well logically some equipment is simply more powerful than
other. They are not guaranteed so you need a kiss from
lady luck. What I don't like is that they are guaranteed
to bards as heir gift. That needs to go. Starting with 7LB
should be out of the question.

Only a fool ignores ranged attacks.

I beg to differ. Herbalism is nice, but you can get
spenseweed without it.

[SNIP]

> blessed Shirt of the Saints [+8, +4] {Le+2

Usually nice in conjunction with a two-handed weapon such
as AotME due to the extra DV.

Whooooa! There are TWO guaranteed anvils in the game!
Kherab and Glod. Glod is probably out of the question as a
crowned L+, but Kherab falls easily to 7LB + humanoid
slayers. And yes. You should have smithed.

It is much much better than Pig Bunch. +Crit will yield
tremendous damage.

Bug temple...?

So you did get it. You know you CAN get past the eternal
guardian without. It's just a regular pain in the rear.

You can't. These are for whips.

Sort off. Will yield a message babbled according to your
current literacy skill.

It removes Cursed, or add Lucky and Fates Smiles is
present/absent in that order. It does NOT help against
Doomed. You need Karmic corpses or piety for that.

> uncursed lump of gelee royal
> [3s] What is this for?
Removing scars. You have 4 so you could have removed one.
In this case it also yields +1 Ap. And it will cure you
and satiate a lot.

I agree. Always take the Healer quest unless you need
Herbalism.

Could have been a workable solution with the shirt of the
saints.

Very handy. Switch to coward and cast it to allow you to
swap past summoned monsters to get to the summoner.

Unlike other bolt spells it also seems harder to shrug.

I have found a few uses for it. You can use it to get
monsters calmed by scaring them and offer 'p'eace. You can
also satisfy the Healer in the fashion. You need to offer
peace to 4-5 monsters or so to do that.

> Slow Monster : 277, 7pp (Effectivity: +1)

Mostly used for two things. Cast it on your self just
before killing a major monster to get more XP and cast on
yourself to get more speed out of corpses. It will
literally guarantee that you get a base speed above 200.

The spell.

These two are easy to miss as they are displayed as a 200s
heavy mace and 120s leather armor before ID.
Once again congratulations.

Indeed. Healing only 1hp every 70 odd turns is NOT fun. I love candle
birthsign so much ;O

There's just so few things that actually use death rays though. They
both protect from sleep and grant see invisibile, while the shirt gives
a small learning boost, much better DV boost, and superior confusion
resistance over stun resistance. As I said, the wrapping also provides
poison resistance and cold immunity, both minor effects.

Yeah, it's nothing comapred to the +50/+50 for needle & sting, but it's
decent. Found that little bit of interest when poking around the ToHit
code =)

There is, though it's a bug. It involves one cursed scroll of repair and
one blessed scroll of repair. Simply read a cursed scroll of repair onto
a stack of uncursed herbs and they will become broken... then read the
blessed scroll of repair to fix them and improve thier status a notch
(uncursed to blessed).

Though, again, you did fine without smithing so you didn't really _need_
it or anything. Always a nice little bonus though, especially when
you're already past the 90 day limit.

The Moon Sickle, quite unlike the other corrupting artifacts, does not
corrupt merely by holding it. It only corrupts when used in combat. Read
my other posts where I explained the odds and methods for you to go
about dipping in raw chaos for specifics; essentially, if you would
randomly create the same item you are dipping, it explodes; this can be
prevented by dipping an item that cannot be created due to lower danger
level.

The 'woooo' was sarcastic. It's not like it returns or anything; one
shot and it's gone until you can pick it up again. It, along with it's
arrow counterpart and the black tome, are some of the worst artifacts by
far.

Thanks :) This character just sort of kept going. It was very energizer
bunny. Other than the looooooooooong period in the middle where I simply
could not find or generate a source of frost, it was relatively smooth
sailing. I played very cautiously (though not slowly), and only pushed into
an area if I knew (or suspected, or inquired) that I would be likely to
survive it. That combined with a very rapid blitz to the end of the game
minimized the potential for dying to a silly vault along the way.

Yeah, I didn't really want to risk wiping myself out to a non essential
combat. If I had run into serious difficulty at the Earth or Mana temples, I
probably would have reconsidered, but I was strong enough to deal with them
fairly easily, so I just kept diving.

Indeed, had I realized that little facet of the Healer class, I definitely
would have chosen Yriggs. Is there a relatively easy way for other classes
to demonstrate mercy to acquire the potions? As it was, I was almost
completely out of healing by the end of D50.

I just recently played a Priest game who found Calm Monster early. That
spell is staggeringly powerful! I was abusing the heck out of it, having
monsters slaughter each other, punching my way to Summoners, luring monsters
easily to Altars, saving myself from situations where I was certain I'd be
doomed. Good fun :) I'll remember that in the future.

So it would seem, Melee in this game is just too bloody dangerous. Almost to
the extent that I think the critters should have more means of closing
distance/stronger ranged attacks in the endgame. Seems a moot point now
though, doesn't look like Adom is going to get much more attention (if any).
That's the only problem with a game with one dev :(

Ah, I suppose I should say Herbs in general :) Plus, there's no way to get
Blessed herbs from picking without Herbalism right? I can't imagine dunking
the amount of Spense I used in Holy Water. I had a severe shortage in the
early midgame.

I considered this for awhile, but I was afraid I'd need to use the emergency

I should have swapped aligns early to grab thieves guild stuff, but I was so
intent on getting a precrowning, I got distracted. Never got the precrown
either, as I completely forgot about the artifact level stuff and generated
too many (which combined with my slow leveling guaranteed I'd get no pre or

I've experimented with this using a few new characters, but at least in the
early game, it seems that the extra energy cost is lethal. Particularly in
early vaults (eg, Kobold, Gnoll, etc). You attack, kill one monster
completely, then the next gets to move in and hit you before you recover
completely. While the second attack is cheaper than doing two normally, the
loss of mobility seems too dangerous (unless I'm missing something about the
way it works). I'll try it again with a character a bit farther into the
game (I've got no objection to losing a few promising characters to
investigate some alternate means of play).

I don't do much creating characters with specific birthsigns, though perhaps
I should. After playing random a bit, I'd like to try some more specific
archetypes, leveraging some early game strengths of various
sign/talent/class/race combinations.

Sleep also I think. And true, but even so, I'd rather have zero things that
can instakill me, rather than a few :)

It is both +10 tohit and +10 todam though? Is that a visible effect, or
hidden like the Ankh? Which reminds me, do you have to greater id the ankh
to make it, um, 'work'? Also, is there a difference in b/u/c status for
greater id? I wish the guidebook had more detailed info on what b/u/c did
for most items. It's very bad for potions/scrolls etc in that respect. I'm
used to nethack, where in very specific cases, even cursed items can have a
unique and potentially useful (though typically dangerous) use.

Hmm. Is this really a bug, or just an odd use of resources? Feels very
nethackish to me. Though 'breaking' herbs seems sort of silly. So does dual
wielding shields :p

Ah, interesting. I'll keep it around next time and look that up. If it's
safe to use, that's definitely worth exploring, for my stacks of useless
amulets and rings if nothing else.

*boggle* Seriously, is that a deliberate design decision? What's the point
of a one shot bolt? Does it at least auto-hit and crit?

I believe _most_ people agree that scumming for birthsigns isn't "wrong"
at any rate. I mean, if you have a specific character in mind... let's
say, a wildly chaotic barbarian - you wouldn't want the tree birthsign
for that. Candle birthsign specifically guarantees that you heal 2 hp
every 12 turns, in addition to the free talent (weak effect, but better
than nothing) and reducing piety loss of praying (you can get 3
lifesaving prayers in before finding an altar). Other birthsigns are
certainly useful too, but I think candle is my favorite =)

Yes sleep too -- but they both give that. re-read what I said ;P
I'm trying to think if there are even _any_ random monsters that use
death rays... checking - emperor liches can apparently, as can ki-rins.
That's _it_ for random genertion... I've yet to even see a ki-rin myself
actually spawn (really low creation probability and pretty high danger
leve), and emperor liches are danger level 45 (DH:2 and really deep in
the CoC). Not even very many uniques either -- the Oracle, Chaos
Archmage, and Elder Chaos God seem to be all, though it's possible I
missed someone. So, you should only need the death ray resistance when
heading off against one of these guaranteed foes, extremely deep in the
caverns/ultra dangerous areas (or really high level), or when digging
great treasure graves.

Double-checked it real quick, and it should indeed be both damage and
ToHit. Also, being drunk raises damage (but decreases ToHit) =)

Spears weilded without anything else get a +2 bonus ToHit and Damage
too, curiously enough. (2 spears won't work either)

The effect should be visibly seen in the damage and tohit listed in the
info. The Ankh should work as normal without IDing it... I haven't yet
investigated what the bonus luck feature does, if anything. (I don't
think Vlad has either).

Cursed effects vary widely between specific items. Sometimes it has no
effect at all (morgia root, for example) while other times it can be
tons worse (summoning an angry djinn instead of getting a wish ;)
Specific differences do need more investigation and more listing in the
GB though, at any rate.

I'd call it a bug. Even artifacts can be broken with those, or so I'm
told. Also, dual-weilding shields makes plenty of sense to me ;P

On my most successfull save-scummed character (an archer), I had my DV
up to nearly 200 when cowardly.

Not for stacks. Raw chaos doesn't work with stacks: a stack of items
dipped in raw chaos turns into a single item.

No, they might actually have some usefulness if they had either ;P Just
high ToHit and Damage :p

Can be trained relatively easily by dancing around anything that casts
bolt spells (kobold shaman, dark sage, etc.) when you avoid the bolt.

Invisible stalker corpses may grant intrinsic invisibility (or see
invisible). Probably not a possibility for a character without food
preservation, since invisible stalkers are pretty rare. Keep in mind
that intrinsic invisibility nerfs the arena quest unless you have
plenty of visibility potions.

Indeed. Concentration and Food preservation are definite wishes for me,
once I have an AoLS and 7LB. I've been playing a lot of hurthling
spelltossers lately for just this reason. Tough to get past the low
starting strength, so they have a pretty high mortality, but comparatively
easy precrowns with cooked corpses. Lately, hurthling necromancer seems
to be my favorite, since they start at N+, and can go see Yergius right
away for Pick pockets.
