teh booting time is ok for p-ii 350, although 128M of RAM should do it a bit faster, especially if you dont have any apps loading at startup. i think u are using win98 se, and i too have noticed the same thing. the hourglass stays for a while after the desktop is displayed, for about 7-8 seconds on my p-iii 500.

it might be the issue with win98 se, but this does not have any implications other than irritation :-)

actually your right win98se , and now that i think about it , i think that started after i upgraded to 98se,
any other ideas would still be welcome incase win98se isn't the culprit

Well, it's probably the registry integrity scanner something or another that W98 does on startup. You can solve your problems by getting rid of it through you're registry under HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run
There's a bunch of other junk you can delete from here too that take up RAM and system resources.

sorry , kinda new here , how do you get to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run

click start- go to run and type in "regedit" then hit enter.
From there follow the above string.
