easy, if you're on a tight budget, get an AMD Duron 700 & appropriate motherboard, 128mb ram, defent HD & Nv MX graphics. Nice fast & cheep system!
PS Most can easily get a Duron 700 to 950-1Gz+ ;)

Good idea, I've just upgraded to a duron 700 with the Asus A7V mobo. My computer is running like a dream now. Also, you can now get a soundblaster live player 1024 for not very much at all, and that soundcard is worth every penny you spend on it. Shop around a bit for the video card though, I'm still using my Voodoo3, but I can now play Unreal tournament at an average of 55fps with my VDU at 1024x768. I don't play Quake3 so I can't help you with numbers there. You can always go for the ABIT RAID mobo as it's great for overclocking too. Even though you're on a budget, you have to spend the money on a good motherboard, it's a false economy otherwise. See http://arstechnica.com/guide/mobo/mobo-1.html for a good buyer's guide. Don't skimp on the memory either, it's worth the extra couple of quid for the CAS2 DIMMs, arstechnica has another wonderful article on DRAM technology over the years and up to DDR SDRAM Vs. DRDRAM. It's quite technical but gives you an idea about how things like CAS2 Vs. CAS3 matter.

Hope that helps,

Fat Chucky
