In the Assassin Guild, trying to pickpocket also triggers the general
alarm. The Guidebook only lists using missile weapons as a possible
reason.

Actually, strictly speaking, trying and *failing* to pickpocket will
trigger the alarm. If you succeed, there's no problem. At least in my
experience.

Also, attacking a panicked creature will sometimes trigger the alarm.
