Hey "just_a_guy" (if thats your name). I also have an ASUS P5A with a K6-2 500mhz in it. It will support up to a K6-2 550. After that you can overclock the FSB. If you want to get rid of the P5A I will take it off your hands for 40$

A K6-III 450 is the fastest you can get for socket 7.
No it is not the highest clock speed but it has a lot more cache than the K6-2 making it much faster.

Check into the k6-3+ cheaper than the k6-3,s ( they are getting scarce) and much more overclockable, same l2 cache.

A little bit of knowledge is a dangerous thing!

However, be careful with the K6-III+ chips because the motherboard must support the 2.0 Voltage which I believe is somewhat rare and a low voltage for most boards. If you don't have one that can go down that low, you have wasted your money.

Yeah, the K6-3+ is great! Added new life to my old TX motherboard for not much money. (I don't think the designers of the motherboard would have ever thought that their board might have a 450MHz processor running in it.)

hey Bubba, I dont agree with you. In no way is a K6-3 450 faster than a K6-2 550.. sure the L2 is much faster but that does not make up for the 100mhz difference. Now a K6-3+ @ 500 or 550 would be faster than the K6-2.. but I dont know much about the K6-x+ they are for laptop's but some work in SS7 mobo's.. They are also made on the .18 micron unlike the .25 that the K6-x was. So you can overclick the +'s to 600 most the time... so i have seen.

My old TX board only goes down to 2.1 Volts, but the K6-III+ is working with no problems.

Sorry Soup, Bubba is right the 450 k6-3 kicks the livin sh** out of the k6-2 550. The one and only benchtest that the k6-2 550 beats it at is the fpu test do to its higher clock rate (fpu is very clock dependent) CPumark 99 scores the 450 k6-3 around 48 the k6-2 550 around 28.2.

The k6-3+ is still the best bet for this gentleman due to the fact that his board will suport it and he does have a 2.0 volt setting on the p5-a.
