Hi

I am spec'ing a system for heavy 2D CAD and number crunching and need some opinions.

I have had "exprience" with NT and compatibility issues before.

My current thinking is:
Athlon 1 to 1.2 GHz
Asus A7V motherboard
256 MB RAM
IBM 30 or 45 GB HDD
Asus V7100 32MB
etc.

OS's will include 98SE, NT4 and possibly DOS (don't ask).

I assume the superiority of the Athlon FPU makes it the obvious choise for serious 2D CAD and third party number crunching software but I am concerned about driver and stability issues with these various components.

Any opinions?

Thanks in advance

You'll be ok, esp. with Windows 2000. Also, think dual processors. Dual processors tend to make the system a lot more stable.

the system sounds good but i'm not too sure about the vid card. as much as i like the geforce (i have a geforce2 gts, the 7100 you mentioned is an mx, right?), i think there are better cards out there for 2D work. i wouldn't know which one to recommend, but i think the geforce series has great fps but isn't at the top of the list for 2D applications.
