In the December edition of MicroWAREHOUSE, a magizine selling all the "latest" supplies, is a page containing the Athlon. On page 145, they state one of the reasons the Athlon is so fast is its "128k L1 cache plus 512k of L2 cache." Is this for real? I thought they had around 384k total, or something like that. Also, the 1GHz processor is selling for $629.00!!! Outrageous!

Well, they made a classic Athlon with the cache of die, running at 1/3 speed, and the 384k you were talking about has to do with the Thunderbird, a new version of the athlon. And it only comes in the Slot A version, so I'd suggest getting a different one.

Yeah..the 512k L2 is the Athlon classic in the slot-A form factor and since all production on this line has been discontinued, the CPU price will stay the way it is for as long as there are demand.

However, I wish in the future AMD will release a new Athlon with 512k L2 on-die cache...should be pretty sweet :P
