enough.

Why, oh why I just _had to_ go to the room half-full[1] of greater
molochs in order to collect demon slaying ammo I'd just fired at them,
when I had a bundle of 47 uncursed quarrels of slaying in my backpack?
SSRT :)

Thus, my level 50 human archer passed away due to three consecutive
critical hits delivered by an experienced greater moloch. 630+ HP
down to minus something. And even no .flg, since I become mad
and quited the game, wildly hitting Esc and N and Z just to relieve
some of the stress. Perheaps I should ask TB to add automatic .flg
creation, configurable in adom.ini, defaulting to current behavior.

Some possible bugs discovered[2]:

- Archery of 100, and Quick Shot are not enough to make
Lightning Shot talent available.
- Affinities with Bows, Cross-Bows and Boomerangs and Scurgari,
Alert and Keen Shot are not enough to make Missile Weapon Master
talent available.

Those two are either bugs in the Adom manual or in game logic. Perheaps
only Bows, Cross-Bows and Slings are counted as missile weapons in
this respect?

- greater undead corpses work pretty reliable for boosting up Toughness
up to 25. However, amulet of balance seems to counter their effects
not only for aligment but for the stat as well. Intentional?

--------------------------------------------------------------------
Long blog follows :)
--------------------------------------------------------------------

I've rolled a human archer. I've played exclusively wizards so far,
so parts of this story are about differences between wizards and archers.

Started as usual, got three quests in Terinyo: carpenter, Kranach and
cute dog, and bought one uncursed large ration. Went stright into
SMC, explored it fully, retrieved blanket and armed myself with
a trap-generated spear, wooden shield, cloak and ring mail. Speed went
down, but PV went up and being Strained was good for my St.

Archers have it easier in SMC then wizards. This particular character
had only 14 Le, so it levelled up slowly. A score of 14 in Le is much
too lowe for a wizard, as he can't learn speels good enough. So when
playing wizards you often end up with a PC that either runs out of castings
in the middle of a fight or levels up much to fast. Archer's supply of
arrows is independant of his Learning, and about 50 arrows he gets
to start with is more than enough.

Another factor is that almost half of my wizards die in SMC due to
fire beetles or cavemen, because their are armed only with Fire or
Frost Bolt. Dopplegangers, the archer's bane, are much more rare, and
an archer is better in melee then a wizard, so he might survive a fight
with one somewhat experienced doppleganger in SMC, with help of two prayers.

After SMC, I bloated myself at Munxip's, and bought as much food
as I could carry, and went off to save Kenny. Stairways on PC:2 and PC:5
were near each other, so I managed to get it alive to the tiny girl.
After that I went back to PC:2, killed all ants and got acid resistance.

I also got poison resistance in PC. Out of elven spider factory.
I feared a bit that, without wands and bolt spells, the uberspiders
become unavoidable, but it was not a case. In PC spiders were weak,
later I used potions of invisibility right after spotting a summoner,
or after noticing "several monsters appearing out of nowhere".
Uncursed potion of invisibility is just enough to get next to the
bastard and kill him on berserk with missiles. Still a spellcaster
has it much easier, bolt spells deal with summoned creatures quicker
then any missiles or melee.

After a short talk with Yiergius I visited VD. I saved the carpenter
more for the hatchet then for anything else. It happend so that it was
the only hatchet until the very late game, there wasn't one even in the
casino. I used this very hatchet to generate blessed logs and fletch
some quality quarrels before going to Mana Temple.

I pickopcketed like mad in the VD, so I become a member of a thieve's
guild and bought Detect Traps skill before venturing into UD.
Second pass through SMC was tricky, as doppleganger lord blocked the
only tunel to the stairway. I had no digging, so I quaffed potion of
invisibility and retreated to the nearest room, hoping that he will
trace me. He did. I had to kill lots of other monsters that I otherwise
wouldn't have to and pray for my life, though.

In UD:1 I finally acquired teleport control.
In UD:2 there was a book shop. Huge. I bought three spellbooks of Light,
and decided to abandon this archer in favor for a wizard :)
In UD:7 there were a vault full of gnolls, which yielded ring of
djinni summoning. It was the first ring I got without explicitly
scumming for it in ID! And I play ADOM for oh so long... started
with gamma16.

There were also herbs in UD. I picked them all up. I haden't got
Herbalism anyway. With wizards it is unwise to ignore herbs in such
a way, since they have very little hit points, and could die in the
pyramid from a single Rehetep's critical hit, even at level 16.
This archer, on the other hand, had already 170HP, being only level 14.

After emerging from UD, I kept reading spellbooks of Light
till they all were destroyed. Managed to get around 150 castings,
-1 to To and +1 to Le. Draining fo Toughness is very rare, but
it happened to me a few times in the course of entire game. Despite this,
I had no problems at keeping my Toughness around 25.

There was a surge of power in D:2. Obtained scorched spear and used
it for almost the entire game, switching it for rune-covered trident
very, very late. I haven't found any other decent spear. I hadn't
stopped me from concentrating exclusively on spears, tough.

The rest of early game was pretty uneventfull. I've done pyramid without
a problem, picked up Curage skill, picked wand of teleportation,
cleared dwarven graveyard, dug graves, and done all Thrundrar quests,
including the greater demon one. I killed the demon with arrow of
demon slaying followed by an arrow of slaying. I had no other
slaying ammo available. Luckily, two shots were enough.

I dumped all my money to Garth, in few steps, and managed to get
my Le to 24. Two crystals of knowledge were also used.

Dwarven mystic hadn't yielded any SoCRs, but ring of djinni summoning
provided me with six.

I've come across four bee hives above banshee level. Kept kicking at
them. Got four gelee royals, lots of wax and generated only about
80 bees in the process. They haven't get uber. I used the wax to
walk leisurely back and forth through animated forest with a banshee
on my tail. This trick not only allowed me to collect free logs,
but also provided for fast crossing - as fast as banshee would go.

So, being level 18, I collected lots of logs in the forest, chosed
two blessed out of them and fletched myself some nice stacks of arrows,
to use up in the water temple. Water temple, needless to say, was easy.
Nothing could stand the arrows. Not more then 5 in any case.

Then I went for ring of the High Kings, only to discover I had no means
to build a bridge. It was then when I remembered that book shop in UD,
and that I was to play a wizard :). So I went to UD, drank all my
potions of wonder and got Strength of Atlas from one of them. I've
picked up all 52 books, teleported away, killed few Thugs and escaped.

While I was at it, I also robbed potion shop in PC and then
removed cursing and dooming on the altar there. Strange items where
enough to restore my piety to very close again.

Armed with helm of mental stability, blessed ring of ice and fireproof
blanket I started to read the books. Burnging Hands just dissapeared
at the first attempt. Tough luck. But I've managed to learn Frost Bolt,
some other bolt spells and darkness. Some spellbooks exploded.
Ring of ice and fireproof blanket protected my equipment.

Then I explored darkforge. Golems died to a phase dagger - a random
drop from Tomb of the High Kings. There was no interesting armour
there - nothing beats AMW. There wasn't any decent spear either,
nor any weapon of penetration. I annoyed Kherab in a feeble attempt
to kill him. He would fall, if only I had more then one slaying
missile that wold affect him. With one arrow of slaying it was
just not possible, he regenerated faster than I could hurt him.
So I teleported away from him, happy that he hadn't picked up that
arrow. It was of great sentimental value. Hotzenplotz fell to it,
when nothing else could hurt him some 20 game days earlier.

I didn't dare to use crown of science to read books. Feared that
my Toughness would drop faster and my equipment would get destroyed
if I failed to read successfully. I sold it to Waldenbrook instead,
and dumped money to Garth for some more learning.

I've done ToEF "cowardly" way. My best melee weapon was scorched spear.
I was afraid my phase dagger might melt even though I had one blessed
ring of ice, and I did not want to use arrows, for the same reason.
Thus I had trouble on the very first floor. I proceeded nevertheless,
trusting in my 169 castings of Frost Bolt, wand of cold and using up
arrows on fire grues and fire demons - my scorched spear couldn't hurt
them, and they shrugged off frost bolts. On the top level I luerd ACW
into the tunnel, killed it with two shots of dragon salying quarrels
(I had an awesome amount of 5 of them, woohoo!) cooked corpse with
Fire Bolt and escaped. The ToEF brought me to level 22.

Finally I retrieved RoTHK. I overdid things this time. I've build
the normal, wooden bridge. And I've lured the ice vortex and had
it freeze the lake. I did it just because I could. I was fast, had
learned Slow Monster, had cloak of invisibility, encountered an
ice vortex and I have never done such a thing before. In addition,
Skeletal King got into blast radius and it took only one undead slaying
arrow to finish him off.

I started to get pretty confident at this point. My archer could
spellcast as good as level 1 wizard, had 70 power points so I could
book-cast Strength of Atlas and train Mana that way. So I book-casted,
read spellbooks, and so on.

Air temple was not hard either. I brought in some light crossbows and
quarrels, thinking they would be more lightning-proof then bows and
arrows, and if not, they were a secondary weapons anyway. I entered
boldly -- and retreated quickly. Intrinsic shock resistance occured to
be not enough. I came back armed with RoHK and yellow longsword of
penetration. Much better. I've killed Yuglash the wizard way - with
repeated castings of magic missile. Well, a true wizard would have
acid-balled him much quicker. Unfortunately, his corpse rotted away
before I could reach it. Oh well.

Then there was a casino. Inside was the only girdle of greed
in this game. I bought it and gambled. Crowning and mega piety at last.
I wonder how much gold would it take for the piety to overflow.
16 million gp was not enough. Would 2.2 billion gp[3] do the trick?

Crowning took place in a VD. I had a choice to back up several dungeon
levels or to go to Terinyo and get two PoCC for ACW and SFB corpses.

I got Far Slayer. So I revised my plan and started to train crossbows
more than bows. Bows become secondary weapon. I also spent long
time in wilderness gathering blessed logs, reading spellbooks,
casting Strength of Atlas and fletching. That's where those
unused 47 uncursed quarrels of slaying came from.

Armed with practically infinite amunts of quarrels I descended
to the earth temple. Killed everything there with arrows and quarrels
of construct slaying.

Then there was a greater vault full of red dragons. It was shaped like
the air temple. I killed everything on the outside with a scorched
spear, save for one Ghost king, that happend to be there (wands of
monster detection rock!). I used my sentimental arrow of slaying
to kill him.

I cleared the center part of the vault like a wizard - frost bolted
everything in there. I would estimate that my character performed
like a level 12 wizard. about 300 PP, 220 castings of bolt spells.

The vault took me from level 29 to level 50 and beyond. There were
lots of ancient red dragons and wyrms. They even confused me a few
times. However the confusion didn't last long and I could frost
bolt even when confused - though not every time.

Corruption started to worry me. I considered going to library,
and obtaining weird tome. But I decided to clear mana temple first.
I hoped my bundle of 347 uncursed quarrels and large amount of various
slaying ammo (finally casino provided some, I lacked it in early
game) would be enough. Somewhere in the UL I encountered
horde of greater molochs. I thought it was a great opportunity to
rise my woodcraft skill -- just gained from potion of education.
I did raise it a bit, but then played foolishly around those molochs
and died.

I can't believe you've read it all along.

I feel much better now :)

Getting a *fourth* missile weapon talent did the trick for me (I had
Bows, Crossbows, Thrown Spears (for the RCT) and couldn't get it. I
added a fourth and I could)

I can't remember whether the fourth was slings or not, though, so that
could also be it.

Almost definately a coincidence; the amulet of balance should have no
effect whatsoever on stat increases.

I added them to the bug list. (Sorry it took quite a while, but at first I
waited for more comments and then I forgot) Some more testing would be
nice, so we'd know what the specific requirements are.
