Background Information
----------------------------------------------------------------------------

Name: Reckless Race: male Drakeling Class: Wizard
Eye color: light blue Hair color: bald Complexion: green
Height: 5'8" Weight: 174 pounds
Age: 21 (young)
Star sign: Cup Birthday: 17/Cup (day 257 of the year)

YOUR HISTORY:
Your parents were poor people. They loved you and cared for
you,
although you had to hunger more than once.
During your childhood one of your uncles taught you a lot of
things
about the history of your people. Your vast knowledge on the legends
and
the lore of your people made you very popular with your friends
because of
all the exciting stories you knew.
During your youth you were very lazy. You slept a lot and
didn't
care too much for your duties and tasks. Your parents were not very
happy
with you.
As a young adult you left your home because of trouble with
your
parents. They opposed your plans for the future without understanding
your
wishes. Thus you decided to live on your own. You wandered through the
country for many years, growing older and wiser and learning many
things.
You decided to become a Wizard.

I died 1 square from leaving the chain because I simply wanted to cast
wish again. I did it once and got an amulet of life saving, and I tried
it again without noticing that silvernight was over. Wish is such a
great thing, but the spell is so useless...

I began the game and got detect traps and trained climbing, which I
usually don't do. I didn't need detect traps because I eventually got a
wand of trap detection combined with farsight. I scummed the ID for
blink dogs to kill before I would put on Tywat's amulet and become
lawful. I got teleport control and a book of teleport early and used it
a lot! I got plenty of books, too, especially magic missile.

The recipe for potions of extra healing was potions of invisibilty and
potions of cure poison! I gained probably 100 max hit points from using
this very cheap recipe! It was very nice.

CoC was a breeze. I calmed all cats in sight and I teleported whenever
I could to move fast and train mana. I cleared both the TotHK (Ice
ball!) and ToEF (Ice ball again!) before deciding Khelly would die. No
ultra for me yet, but this is my first normal win.

I carelessly skipped the water temple and got straight to the casino. I
got tons of books and potions and wands there. I also went down and got
the cat lord's ring. Then, I went back up and cleared up the water
temple. Easy. I also got crowned with the RING OF IMMUNITY. This, along
with the cat ring, are my favorite rings in the game. I felt like
Sauron for a while!

I left my stuff behind before doing the air temple. I had over 48
willpower (nonnak, amulet, and orb), so my acid balls wiped out a huge
area. The master summoner died fast to my scorch. Alas, the lightning
ate up his corpse too quickly for me.

Just before the earth temple, I cleared a greater vault of giants and
won Soaker, Wyrmlance, and Executer. Too bad I love Nonnak's sword so
much! Had I known it had death resist on it, my earlier wizard may have
lived. Anyway, I leaned on the keyboard and slowly meleed the giants
down. I cleared the earth temple completely in melee, no spells or bows
at all, with an uber phase dagger (I love scrolls of melee
power/accuracy!)

And then a SECOND greater giant vault awaited me just under the earth
temple! I cleared this one with my sword and got Whirlwind and the
Black Tome. I wish I had saved Khelly, I could have gone for an ultra
ending with all those artifacts and 3 extra wishes (more on that
later). I got level 12 in swords, and was 2/3 of the way to level 13.
My wizard was almost beginning to feel like a barbarian! If only I had
gotten a sword of sharpness...

I skipped the blue dragons caves and went straight for the chaos
archmage. Despite +50 or so to hit in missles, I only hit him one time
with a blessed humanoid arrow, and the damage with disappointing. He
fell quickly to my acid balls, though.

I then left the CoC and cleared out the bugs, and exchanged my corpses
for corruption potions. I only had 2 corruptions (teleportitis and
rage) when I was in D49. I got the preserver from throwing a potion of
uselessness! A great replacement for my +6 amulet of willopower. Magic
missiles killed almost everything in there. After drinking a blessed
potion of boost willpower, acid balls killed the molochs (INSANE
experience! I gained like 20 levels!). I hit the switches and
teleported out. I had plenty of sis to throw myself out of the cold,
which wasn't bad at all for my drakeling.

And best of all, I got 3 rings of djinni summoning in this game! 2 in
the casino and 1 in the cavernous level right under the cat lord's
level. One went to a girdle of giant strength. 2 went to potions of
uselessness. 3 went to chaos resistance scrolls deep in the CoC (only
got 2). Corruption was not a major problem for me at all. I could have
avoided like 3 corruptions if I didn't decide to melee through those
greater vaults.

Overall, wizards are great, newb friendly characters to play as. I
regret not playing as a grey elf again, though. I got 2 magic writing
sets in this game, with 8 charges overall. Had I played an elf, I could
have easily gotten alertness and food preservation with scrolls of
education. Plus those extra wishes. The early strength, toughness, and
skills benefits of drakelings don't equal the potential of grey elves
later on, in my opinion. Drakelings also take a long time to level. On
the other hand, the speed bonus made ToEF extremely easy, which is
where most of my promising characters die.

For my first ultra, I might play as a gnome wizard. They level
extremely quickly. Could a salamander born gnome with some luck with
stat potions have any chance of casting wish? I just can't think of any
easier way to get one of those amulets of life saving.

Nonnak over Executor? Give me Executor any day.

I'd pick this over Nonnak too, especially with all your training in swords!

Someone in the group will complain about this, and rightly so. Its hard to
get to the end without using ranged weapons at all...

Why bother to carry around a book when you've got this many castings?

Is really it a YAVP if you die before leaving the chain? (I'm not
criticizing you for it, its further than I've gotten! I'm just curious as
to what the group's consensus is)

See comments above. Why do you love Nonnak's sword? If it were the
difference between 32 Willpower and 27 Willpower, for a character, I'd
completely agree with you...

Well, the hiscore doesn't list these games as victories, if I remember
correctly. The relevant entries look something like "Foo ... died on ...
after saving the world.", while "true" winners get something like "Foo has
won the game." (unfortunately, I can't access my hiscore to check the exact
messages). So technically speaking Higher Game didn't win the game.

Cheers, Gero

I don't want to be cursed. And, correct me if I'm wrong, but doesn't
willpower prevent monsters from shrugging off bolts? It was also good
for giving me stronger ball spells. And death ray resistance, of
course! I didn't want to be instakilled.

though.

That's not a sword. It's a 2 handed weapon.

No, it's not. Acid ball is much stronger than I thought it would be,
even at it's relatively low effectivity.

I didn't know range wasn't going to be needed so much. I didn't need
the mana talents anyway.

Erm, no, it's not a real victory. That way, when I get my ultra, I can
sound l33t and be able to say my first win was an ultra, and it was
easy. ;)  (jk!)

Because it has death resistance! Instakills are instakills, period. The
willpower is icing on the cake, figuratively speaking. It was also cold
resistance. After getting the RoTMC (for see invisible), I never had to
use the mummy wrapping again.

Elves don't start with food preservation or alertness, like drakelings.
I love those two skills. I would write scrolls and lose mana just to
get one of them. Chaos resistance isn't worth losing mana, though, in
my opinion. I just didn't need it that much.

I love executor. Being cursed really isn't so bad, especially when you
have fate smiles & lucky to more than counter the effect. (doomed, on
the other hand, should be avoided at all costs). The AMW is plenty
sufficient for the very few instances you need death ray resistance; the
only randomly found monster that casts it, IIRC, is the emperor lich.
Plus, the AMW can't be weakened like your plate was. I can see being
safe as much as possible, but death rays are rare enough that this is
probably unnessecary.

I'll agree with higher on these, I love shields too much. (and he's
right about the two-hander; SOME two-handed weapons are 'two-handed
weapons' and others aren't, it's kinda confusing & silly :p )

If you're not going to melee ever, then yes, Nonnak is good.
According to your (lack of) axe marks, you didn't try executor. Don't
knock it until you've tried it. If its the difference between a range N
and a range N+1 ball spell, Nonnak is better, without question. In all
other cases, I'd have a hard time passing up executor (especially on D50,
since its a demon slayer and a humanoid slayer!)
But I also melee quite a bit as a wizard.

Death ray resistance is not worth the step down in attack to get it, IMO.
There are very few enemies who can instakill you will death rays. You had
on +5/+3 eternium plate mail. You could have swapped in Executor and the
AMW and ended up ahead, keeping your death resistance... of course, the
mail was probably +5/+11 or somesuch before the balors got ahold of it,
which would make that a much harder sell.

Good point, I forgot Wyrmlance was a halberd, not a spear.

Oops.

I'm not crazy enough to melee balors. Molochs were fine, but balors ate
acid.

It used to have 13 PV. I left many eternium plate mails on the ground
in D50. After all, I didn't need them anymore. And before writing off
death rays, I did lose my last character to an emperor lich, so I do
know what they're capable of doing.

But out of curiosity, exactly how much range does a death ray have?
With farsight, they might not be an issue.

Also, is killing and eating the oracle for a big learning boost worth
trying? After the old crone, of course. Spoil me plx.

I had about 130 DV on very defensive and immunity to all elements. It
didn't really matter what weapon I used. ;)

It's too bad I didn't play tourist for longer with this character. I
never checked out the blue dragon caves or the scintillating cave or
any other really cool spots.

Ki-Rins, off the top of my head, and MonsterDex confirms that they are the
only other non-unique that can cast it.

....and Ki-Rins are extremely rare and typically non-hostile. (If we can
consider lawful PCs the "typical" case, which is definitely the case for
me.) I've never ever faced a hostile Ki-Rin in many years of playing
ADOM [1]. I agree with the notion that death ray resistance is not
required all the time.

On the other hand, I typically wear the ancient mummy wrapping most of
the time, simply due to the fact that dying due to "regular" damage is
normally a non-issue later in the game, so that good PV is not really
needed. This might be different for other playing styles. In places with
lots of combat and no death rays, I typically switch to other armour
(fire and earth temples, D:50).

Indeed they are incredibly rare: I think I have encountered three or maybe
four of them in the few years I've been playing. However, this just means
that most people don't know that they can cast Death Ray. Truth to tell
though, the only character I have lost to a Ki-Rin didn't even see it - he
got zapped by something out of field of vision. Game over. Suffice to say
that since then I have paid more attention to increasing the perception
attribute and equipping those items which increase field of vision when
doing recces through the lowest levels of the CoC.

Not for me. I tend to play neutrals so ki-rins (as rare as they are) tend to
be hostile.

> Indeed they are incredibly rare: I think I have encountered three or maybe

Rare as hen's teeth, or something like that. In my current game I may have
met one or two of them and a grand total of dozen or so, I guess.

I did know that, and usually I try to have death ray resistance as much as
possible.

Same thing happened to me with my first potential game winner beastfighter.
In the cavernous level deep in the CoC my char got zapped by an unseen
Ki-rin. Game Over. Too bad the char was wearing Natures Companion instead
of the Ancient Mummy Wrapping :(

Fortunately my current game winner beastfighter (my first ever melee winner)
got BoW as crowning gift, thus making death by death ray a non-issue.
Though I haven't actually finished yet, but are currently roaming the ID in
the hope of turning the char into Archmage (again sans mana orb).

Ah. I didn't know if they were hostile to neutrals or just to chaotics
for lack of experience with that. Well, then I agree that hostile
Ki-rins are indeed not as uncommon as I though.

Wow, that's quite many actually. With several dozen winners, I can only
recall meeting Ki-rins about two or three times. About as often as I've
found wands of wishing.
