just saw over at HardOCP that they had their 1.5Ghz P4 chugging along at 1.77Ghz

"We had our 1.5GHz P4 running at a pretty solid 1.77GHz! We will have you some benchmarks on this soon. Anybody can badmouth the P4 all they want, but 1.77 is incredibly fast, no matter how you slice it"

Here Here!
I dont love or hate intel, but 1.77 IS FAST

It's true 1.77 is fast (as Tom had his running at about the same) the P4 may be a great chip but it is not worth it's cost at the moment, as the support for it increases, as it will cos intel are huge it will become more and more viable.....but as it stands there is no way I would consider buying one, especially with all of the 64bit CPU's looming up

i agree that current prices make buying the P4 crazy, but i will be looking to upgrade my current 1.008GHz P3 soon to 1.7+Ghz, and if prices come down i am very tempted to go for the P4, especially since i only use my machine for gaming (and surfing) and Rambus rocks for games as we all know, plus the P4 seems very overclocking friendly. Soft menu III with a P4 could be very interesting...

Keep your options open , I will go for the fastest chip for a reasnable price when I upgrade and I really don't care who makes it....
I have currently
PII 350,PII 300 (Laptop),Athlon 750 classic,Athlon 1000 T-bird,K6-2 550 ,P233mmx as my line up(I do use them for bussiness as well as games...)
All I can say is as long as competion rages in this market the only winners are us....

Of course 1.77 is fast. Lots of MHz. The concern isn't MHz though, or even GHz. It's P-E-R-F-O-R-M-A-N-C-E. That there is just another sad story of where people have fallen for Intel's MHz (or GHz) trap.

And here we go again; the same 'old' discussion unfolds.... P4: great or not? Pfff.....

That P4 @ 1.77 is only as good as the video card. I think it is over kill at this point for games. It might be good for seti and MPEG4 Encoding. But who runs only those kind of programs only?

thats true, especially since i play all games at 1240 resolution. The upgrade from P2 350 > 1GHz P3 gave me 4fps increase in quake3 at 1240 32 bit!
