Long live flat mode!

Trying to get my profile to display threads in flat mode by default. Yes, I have it changed in my display preferences. But it still doesn't work. Every time I return to the board, I have to change it in the first topic I view. Then it stays for the rest of that session.....and back to threaded mode when I return another time. Pretty newbie question I know, but it's pissing me off. WTF?

AMD XP 3200+ (Barton Core)
Asus A7N8X Ver2.0
2 X 512MB Mushkin (2.5-3-3)
Sapphire ATI 9800PRO
