If you think of the support time that's left between Windows 2000 and Windows XP, and you want to get the most out of it, you should really get Windows XP.

There's a few options to turn this off. In Display Properties, you can change the Appearance options for Windows and Buttons to Windows Classic Style. You can use ClearType, which makes things pretty clear. Also, if you like the old Start Menu, after right-clicking the taskbar, you can see that you can change back to the classic Start Menu.
Also, Windows XP is just made to support more hardware and software. For future upgradability, you should use Windows XP over Windows 2000.
Those are my two cents. If you can get Windows 2000 for free or something like that, I'd rather go for that.
