I'm sitting here contemplating my new Athlon and cooler (Global-Win FOP32) and thinking about the stories of cracked CPUs. Is it advisable to remove the pads at the corners of the CPU to prevent extra stress or does that produce more stress. Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Do not remove those pads, those help level the cooler preventing the rocking motion that will crack the core.
