people who say p4 is fast for games (like tom) tested the cpu in 640x480.

But seriously who play at that resolution ? if u buy a p4 or athlon 1200 with a gf2 card, ull probably play at more than 1024 or 1280. At that resolution, i think the p4 1.5GHz will have just the same fps than a 1 ~ 1.2 Ghz athlon. So buying a p4 is just a waste of money .

hmm... I think at higher resolutions it is the videocard that's the bottleneck (the processor calculates stuff as coordinates in the system internally, and couldn't really care less what the end resolution is:). The P4 should perform better with some 3d games, but not because of P4 chip itself, but because of RAMBUS which has higher bandwidth... the P4 itself might actually be slower with non-SSE2 optimized games than athlon, but again, the processor isn't the bottleneck in high-res, it's the memory bandwidth (which RAMBUS currently, much as we hate to say it, leads) and 3d card

true. At higher resolution P4 or an Athlon doesn't seem to make much difference, but that's because the video card's the bottleneck. If GF3 is successful in removing such a bottleneck, the same performance advantage of P4 in 640*480 should translate into advantage in high res. like 1280 no problem.
