A possibly interesting way of getting to 9000 xp (about 8th level) with
no equipment necessary

I accidentally downloaded the demo at the GB site labeled "Achieving
experience level 14 very quickly" where a wizard kills various named
NPC's with a wand to get a lot of experience. This was under the old
experience system which gave a lot more xp. Nevertheless I wondered if
the Old Barbarian might be subject to being killed quickly for xp by a
low level character.... since I haven't yet managed to figure out a way
to do so with the Great Water Dragon (uber xp!)

Noting the Old Barbarian cannot fight in the dark I gave it a try and
had an unexpected success first go. The Old Barbarian has 500 hp and
PV 12 whereas my level 1 characters were doing (Beserking) a maximum of
13 damage (before criticals). What usually happens if you try to
darkfight a monster that's way out of your league is that you gradually
whittle away their health with an ocassional critical here and there.
After a while the creature panics and then kills you instantly with
virtually no warning (the fact that you are beserking doesn't help
there).

It's a process that is little understood. Anyway for whatever reason
the Old Barbarian doesn't panic. My troll beastfighter took about 970
turns to kill him (and two gremlins --- yeah well that was the easiest
way to a guaranteed dark room without any equipment). My 1st level
drakish mindcrafter took 2500 or so turns. Sooooo.... not very fast
method of gaining xp as it turns out. Kinda funny though. I suppose
the Old Barbarian was a bit like a certain character in Monty Python.
Despite the battle going so badly for him he never paniced! I wonder
if this is a rare combination? No panic + can't darkfight?

I should warn you that after you kill the old guy this way you feel
rather guilty!

They are unrelated. Incidently, the water dragon won't fight in the
dark, but she does flee (which is bad news).

Well, he teaches the courage skill.
