Blessed Bloated

I figure I'll put the story at the beginning, so readers don't have to
scroll to the end for the play-by-play...

Just got back from college 3 weeks ago (The Ohio State University, we're
on quarters so we end ridiculously late compared to most collegest), and
decided to fire up ADOM for some mental-stimulation. Three characters
later, I had a winner. Randomed Female and High Elf, chose Wizard upon
getting the Wand starsign. The start was definitely the hardest part of
the entire game for this character. She had constant food problems
until the CoC, we're talking major. Most food drops occurred while she
was in the "Hungry!" status, and I think I even got a corpse while
"Starving!". I used one prayer for satiation, but couldn't fandangle
another one out... luckily I was able to make it to the HMV and buy some
food there. I couldn't progress very far, because the Puppy Cave, the
CoC, and the evil Druid's place (can't recall the name) had water on the
first level to confound my plans. Eventually I rustled up Teleport &
TC, and a book of Frost Bolt, so water was no longer an issue.

Started out Lawful, got to Neutral after reaching the Dwarven City in
order to get some of Yergius's more useful talents (climbing Theoretical
training for the Library, more Theoretical training for Detect Traps,
that kind of stuff). After stocking up on the training, I became lawful
and made the biggest rookie mistake. I found a lawful altar, so I
figured I'd just sacrifice small amounts of gold to change my alignment.
Bad move. Destroyed my equipment. Dumb. Dumb. Dumb. I felt little
urge to go on, because I lost a pair of 7LB and Bracers of Toughness {TO
+7}, but I continued, because a Wizard can rely on spells while
collecting equipment, to an extent.

Had to give up on Khelly unfortunately, but I wasn't in the mood to try
for an Ultra ending, so it was no big deal. Nothing special with the
Water Temple, except I learned that the Grues and Elementals there are
weak to fire. I had always expected it to be lightning weakness,
because most other games (RPGs, Mega Man games) usually have lightning
as the bane of water-based creatures. Anyway, I digres... Found a book
of Lightning Ball, so I ravaged the Steel Golems to get access to the
weapon and armor caches there. It was there that my character's life
changed: she found three 50s halberds... meaning Eternium... One was
just a normal eternium halberd, one was the Barbed Eternium Halberd of
Mayhem that sat in my inventory, and the last one was the Blessed
Eternium Halberd of Devastation (+11, 8d7+14) [-2, +0]. I was pumped...
she equipped the Eternium Halberd of Devastation immediately and never
looked back.

ToEF was no cakewalk, because I was expecting to be able to outrun the
ACW... but it had a speed of 130 vs. my 112 or so... then I remebered
that the last character I brought in there was a Drakeling, so it could
outrun the ACW with a speed of 250+. Took it out eventually, then dove
deeper into the CoC.

Casino yielded some good books, and Preserver, which I ended up not
purchasing. A ring shop a few levels down contained the Ring of
Immunity, which was cursed, so it didn't cost an arm and a leg.

Cleared the Air and Earth temples with no problems, then tackled the
Library. No weird tome from that, but whatever.

Prepped for the dive by reading all of my books and drinking all good
potions. Alchemy made Gain Attributes as Ultra Healing & Longevity,
while Longevity was Stomafillia and Balance. Therefore, I made a bunch
of PoGA. Then I wanted to write some Scrolls of Chaos Resistance.
However, it kept saying "You don't know how to do that"... which
confused me until I realized that I had never seen a ?oCR in this game.
I ran to the Bug Temple (successfully cleared it for the first time!)
and the HMV to grab the scrolls at those locations, ID'd and blessed
them, then wrote one or two more. With my level at ~31, I decided it
was time for the Dive.

I cleared down to D:48 to get the high experience from the grues there,
then headed over to the Mana Temple (I skipped the Karmic Wyrm's quest
because I'm a wuss). Things got a bit hairy when a Greater Earth
Elemental was generated and blocked my path of retreat through the
trapped spiral area. Luckily I was able to down it with my halberd
before losing too much life. The Chaos Archmage was tough as always,
but no really close calls.

D:50 was interesting, because I realized that I didn't have any wands of
Destruction, so I would have to kill everything. A Blessed Scroll of
Familiar Summoning yielded a Greater Earth Elemental, so now it was my
friend instead of my bane. It did a great job of killing stuff,
including balors, until Fistinarius was roused... he killed of my
Elemental pretty quickly. Nothing really interesting on the rest of
D:50, other than a Ghost Lord that was afraid of me, so I had to mine
out and chase it around half of the level to catch it (even though I
don't think that they can handle levers). Ascended through the
Darkforge, completed the GWU quest, and left.

Intersting tidbits:

Generated a shop disconnected from anything... second time I've ever
seen that.

One greater vault... a Giant vault.

At CoC ~35, there was a threat room of Ogre Emperors in a cavernous
level, meaning a square of Ogre Emperors in the middle of the room.
This was interesting, because I didn't even know that Ogre Emperors
existed. Cleared fairly easily, although I had to retreat to regenerate
mana, because I failed to notice that Improved Fireball takes more mana
than advertised, I guess depending on the distance.

I never found a potion of uselessness! I think this was the first game
that I've gotten past the ToEF without having found a Potion of Uselessness.

Corruption wasn't too much of a problem... although I seemed to get the
same corruptions over and over (ex: use Tract of Order to remove Unholy
Aura, get it back a few turns later, and at least one other example of
that).

UL:6 had 2 named Great Red Wyrms in it, and I found one more in a dragon
vault.

No wishes in the entire game! Given, I didn't drink from any pools
either, so I guess that's alright.

I didn't find a wand of door creation until I was almost ready for the
ToEF... usually I have them coming out of my ears.

This game definitely had the highest final stats of my 3 victories, and
I thought I accomplished more, yet my score was the lowest of the 3.
Perhaps it was because I failed to save Khelly (and the puppy!).

I took off my Brannalbin's Cloak of Defense to talk to the Druid (to get
the GWU quest), then forgot to put it on, so that's why the character is
cloakless.

And now: some random comments interspersed between my flg.

*** Interesting Observation ***

In the CoC, there was no "S" path to choose from. I was surprised to
find that the Arena generated on level 3, meaning that an "S" path would
be impossible, since it would go 1 -> S -> Arena, which doesn't happen.
I had never seen this occur before, and never heard any instances of
it happening, so I made a save file of it, if anyone wants to look at it.

It's common knowledge. GB section 2.1: "There may be a split in the
early dungeon levels of the CoC. Two down staircases may be available.
This is by no means guaranteed."

IME it depends on where the Arena is generated, the two up staircases
seem always to be one level above the Arena. As the Arena can be on
D:3-5, the 'S' level is either 2, 3 or nonexistent. There is a small
error in the GB stating that two down staircases can be found on D:3 also.
