ABIT thermistor/cpu question

Ok so I have all the stuff for my first scratch-built system. My problem is that my ABIT KT7 RAID mobo has a thermistor sticking up in the center of the cpu mounting socket. Is it ok to bend this thing down by hand? I see no other way of getting the CPU to sit flat. Secondly, since this thermistor measures CPU temp, is it critical that it actually contact the underside of the CPU?

Thanks in advance, this is my first time doing this and I'm pretty paranoid :)

Actually, the thermister will give a more acurate reading if it touches the base of the CPU. I bent mine up so that it would touch. If it is not bent too far just put the CPU in the socket and gently push down as you lock down the lever.

I bend it up slightly too to give max contact with the cpu, ignore the idiot that mentioned breaking it off
