Hi all, death to all ADOM cats.
This is nothing important, just question about personal styles. When
reading recent messages - especially these advices for newbies, i saw
advices like: "... and switch to Very Aggresive and..." or "... get
Berserk and...". My question is: what tactics settings are you
normally using? When and why? I use just three: normal, berserk and
coward.
I often see advices about wizards geting coward with two shields,
but my experience is different. I often manage wizard begginings best
with weapon (even that lousy 1d4 dagger) and true berserk. You'd be
surprised what low levlel wizards manages to kill in one hit. My only
wizard (non-fighter) win (normal end) finished that certain spoily
(greater) enemy wielding eternium 2h, but more importantly while true
berserk... Any comments about this?

For a melee type with a shield--very aggressive. They do decent damage,
they can probably take any hits, and given that you get shield points
when shields block an attack, and the blocked attack is more likely to
be blocked by a shield (because it's less likely to be blocked by
anything else), it levels the shield skill fairly quickly.
For a melee type with no shield, or one who's maxed out their shield
skill, I might go true berserk. But really, I find it smacks of
overconfidence, and that's a killer.
Otherwise, whatever seems most likely to keep me alive. Generally I'll
hover around normal unless I'm particularly concerned about hit points,
but really, I tend to switch around a lot--I'm most often at the most
agressive setting at which I could survive the last monster that took
more than three hits to kill.

I try to use coward when just walking around (since it'll help evading
traps and other unexpected attacks). Usually berserk when firing
missiles with no monsters in melee range (and little chance of being
fired at myself). In melee combat, usually normal or (if I want to
maximise the amount of weapon marks gained) defensive (since it will
then take more hits before a monster is killed, while still yielding
weapon marks). If the situation seems to require it (e.g. fire beetle
or displacer beast in the early game, when to-hit and/or damage are
low), aggressive or very aggressive. I guess I seldom use very
defensive tactics.

Well, interesting approach. I might try it some time.

I go berserk always with my beastfighter, unless I am in combat with
bad stat-drainers (minataur mages) in which case I am normal, or if I
am luring things/dieing (darkforge), in which case I am coward.

Well, I spend most of the time on Coward, especially with spellcasters. In
battle I usually go for Very Aggressive, since the bonuses outweigh the
penalties more then Berserk. If I want to try my best to kill something in
one hit (eg a claw bug, or when I'm at my last HP and desperate) then I'll
use Berserk. Different characters can end up with different tactics
settings, and they change through out the game, so I usually keep an eye on
the way the figures are to see what carries the most weight.

Agreed. Cats are lame.

I use all the tactics except Very Defensive (which, let's be honest, is
virtually useless). Most of the time, I play Defensive, although if I'm
playing a relatively buff melee character, I'll play Normal or Aggressive in
the early game. If the PC starts out with little armour anyway (e.g.
barbarians, drakelings) I'll truely berserk. When I come across a PV-laden
freak (e.g. fire beetles early on) I'll up the tactic to (Very) Aggressive
or Berserk. I rarely use Normal unless I happen to need more DV than
Aggressive but more damage than Defensive; it's sort of a habituation for
the later acquisition of the Tactics skill.
If I have a shield, things change somewhat; depending on the quality of the
shield, I'll fight normally on Very Aggressive.
Coward is mostly for walking around; this helps avoid stupid surprise
missile attacks and bolts. It's also obviously for running, or just cowering
in a corner while I heal if there's no place to run (bring another shield
along). I also stick to it when I'm just going around casting spells, or
performing time-consuming actions such as eating or reading. Berserk is for
firing missiles while out of the line of attack of bolts. Berserk is also
for attacking (greater) molochs using the Hack n' Back technique.

I think that's insane. But, hey, whatever floats your boat.

you know what's lame? about a year ago, a kitten decided
that my house is pretty lovely and he should stay here.
he destroyed every plant i had, both in the house and in
the back yard.
he destroyed my favourite pillow.
i've had to endure sand from his kitty toilet all over
the place.
there was never a fondness for auxiliary cleaning rags
on his side (but there was for my bed, especially after
changing the sheets), so when it rained and everything
was muddy, he'd go straight for my bed when he got home.
he could munch two big, costly cans of whiskas per day.
on several occasions, he was sick, so i had to request
some days off of work to take him to a costly vet.
twice he had problems with the lymph (sp?) glands on his
neck; once he got bitten on his tail by something, so that
got infected and i had to endure massive injuries to my
arms trying to force antibiotic pills down his throat,
as well as taking him to the costly vet four more times
so he could get some antibiotic and vitamin shots.
then he got better.
and as he got better, about three weeks ago, he went out
one evening, never to return.
I'M NEVER, EVER HAVING A CAT AGAIN!
i mean, that's just cruel. i've grown close to the little
bastard, watched him hunt grasshoppers and butterflies,
played hide and seek with him, got woken up by his
whiskers every morning, and now he's gone. i can only hope
that he died a quick and painless death

Oh, matija, I'm so sorry.
I really really hope he shows up again. Even if he is a horrible
manipulative little furball who will put you to great inconvenience and
expense and be cute at you and get you to forgive him all the
frustrations when he purrs at you.
Stupid cats.
Love and coffee,
Frances (owns two. We shall not speak of the vet bills)

I was under the impression that you don't get shield skills for using
very aggresive or beserk tactics.

Just Berserk, according to the Manual. "Weapon Level" section, third
paragraph under the melee weapons table.

Too sad to read. We have two cats, one of them has some kind of
non-curable disease, we have to buy pills every month. But my advice
is: give it another shot. Adopt another one.Nothing is better than a
purring cat. :-)
