and i had thought previously of putting a computer in a fish tank with water cooling going into the water to keep it at tropical fish temperatures. this would be a normal case with fish around the outside.
however i then thought Hmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm (thinking noise ) what if i remove the fish, and distile the water.
distiled water does not conduct electricity.
so i want to do this test, get a crappy old computer, clean the crap out of it, remove all fans, and heat sinks, basicly clean it by power distiled water. (nothing that is conductive would remain on the surface, no loose particles...)
then submerge the whole thing in pure water, and put a lid on the top. perhaps a conductivity monitor being put in the water to know when to change the water.
if things like metal started disolving into the water (so it got more conductive over time) the next thing i would want to test is spraying everything with a plastic coating (or a clear coat of paint thats non conductive) and perhaps sealing the plugs and things (after all the pieces had been plugged into it) with sealant of some type.
how cool would that be? it would be pretty sweet
pity there would be no fish though.
you guys think it would be possible? or stupid idea?
anyone want to give it a shot?

I don't think it's possible to clean the computer and the water such that there will be no conduction. Maybe the plastic coating might work although that might also hamper the dissipation of heat to the water.
All in all? Pretty stupid idea but if you really are bored out of your mind then you could give it a go. I think you should team up with SoD so that he can have this computer with him while he's sitting at the bottom of a lake debating the meaning of life with a bunch of fish. He could show them THG then and laugh at the <4th grade education of the fish (and then realize he'd better shut his mouth or water will flow into his lungs).

I posted an "oil computer" a while back...how will you make water non-conductible? distilled oh yeah...but won't the water become contaminated when you submerge the parts?
distilled oh yeah...but won't the water become contaminated when you submerge the parts?
well thats the $3.76 question isn't it.
i mean how much can you clean a computer so that it at least takes a month or so before the water conducts?

I'd spray the mobo with a coat of clear auto paint first before submerging it.
well on that topic, i actually have a $200 compressed air spraygun right here. got all the bells and whistles on this thing. and i got tins of Auto paint (from the company that did LOTR special effects paint) and clear coat sitting in a big pile. (got one of those scary brething masks that makes ya sound like darth vader too)
only missing thing is distiled water and a computer.
i am just thinking that if i can seal up any loose electrical connections (ram slots, PCI slots, connectors...) and coat the rest of the mobo with clearcoat, i would be sweet as.
on the other hand, i am thinking that the paint might be conductive, and it might be smarter to just clean the mobo like a crazy mofo and try it in the cleanest water possible, just monitoring the conductivity hardcore.
Hmmmmmmmmm
/me is far from bored because of ideas like this.
if i could make this work i would be a well linked to man.

AT, innovative thought is coveted in this world and here you are trying to build the first pc that likes water. Thats fine... given that you're a liberal liberal, how about you find that computer, forget the tests, give it to the local homeless guys and teach them the basics of pc software so that they may have a chance at a better life. .
Its just jokes, bud. PCs under water is different.

I've seen it done with mineral oil. I'm not sure if it would last years in it, but it works for a good deal of time. Water might cause oxidation of some parts over time, as well as develop conductivity through impurities, so I would think that it wouldn't last too long. It would work for awhile though.

The water will also act as a dielectric so that'll cause you problems too. And it dissolves the metal in the leads very very quickly. Wouldn't take long.
You know, come to think of it, I think you need to change jobs. It's making you bitter and obnoxious.
Some Quality control people I know are pretty fukced up in the head and just jealous that they can't seem to get another job. Why just don't say bye to all that high techie stuf, viruses, haxx0rs, etc, and make a fresh start: become a fulltime professional fisherman? Make sure to throw your laptop overboard though so we don't have to endure your debilitating professional educational [-peep-] anymore, including your educated spelling errors.
Next time when I'm in Canada, I'll let you know beforehand. Last week was not a good time for me to go fishing, sorry. But then again, you already knew I was there, right? Or didn't you check out my IP address then?

They're probably running at lower rpm given the viscosity of the fluid. Other than that, what would be the problem? (assuming that they can stand being in oil in the first place, apparently they can).
