Best ways to train pets?

Hi all,
I'm eager to try pet-training as an ADOM pasttime. I recently had a play
with lizardman bards, because I love lizards, but no matter which animals I
train, I can't seem to even *begin* to level them up before they take
damage.

I'm hoping for some comprehensive information on the best ways to train
pets. It can be as scummy or fair as you like, I just want to know how to
get a pet more powerful than I am.

Having played necromancers to completion more than once, and having used the
small cave, I think I must be missing something (or lotsof things).

I have patience, but no clue where to start. Anyone fancy helping me out?

Thanks,

I'm not sure if this would work, but have you tried polymorphing your
pet? Who knows, you could get a Lich for a "pet", if you could call it
that...

The trouble with that is, there's no such thing as "polymorphing" in
ADoM - not in the sense in which it exists in many other roguelikes,
anyway. The closest you can come is by dousing a creature with a
particular type of potion, and not only is that unreliable, the only
available means of achieving it will also make the creature hostile -
meaning, no longer a pet.

That doesn't mean it's impossible to have a lich for a pet, just that
you can't get one by those means.

Also, Mechanoid: please learn to quote.

It's tedious. But try with somthing which regenerates fast. Fairy
dragon do, not only it. Strange, guidebook doesn't mention it.

DarkFox : "and having used the
small cave"
----------------
Do you mean : used it by reading a "familar summoning scroll" in it?.
The power of the summoned pet is adjusted by how dangerous the present
dungeon is. So at low levels, they might be quite tough.
