Swimming and water filled rooms?

I have a Gnomish priest who is on the second level of the puppy cave.
I've come upon a water filled room that seems to be the only way to get
through to the rest of the level. A few questions:
1. Is it possible for levels to be generated at this stage in the game
where it is necessary to cross deep water, or is there probably another
way around that I'm missing?
2. Since I don't have swimming or frost bolt as of yet, what other
alternatives if any are there?
3. It would seem logical to me that a character would have a chance to
learn at least the basics of the swimming skill just through experience.
I've been jumping in and out of deep water and taking drowning damage
just to see what would happen but so far, my character apparently hasn't
even gotten a clue as to how to float.

TIA for any info,

Yes, it is possible. The "water-filled room" is actually part of an
underground river, which cuts across the entire level; there is almost
certainly not a way to walk around it. (If there *is* such a way, then
it a) requires much digging to use and b) is a bug.)

Teleportation. But you almost certainly don't have that, either.

Bridge building. But that's probably much less commonly attained than
teleportation is, and in any case the bar to entry is rather high.

No, that isn't how to learn swimming; ADoM doesn't permit learning
skills in that kind of way. Perhaps it should, but that's up to Thomas,
and he hasn't shown any inclination to do that kind of thing so far.

There are a very few ways in the game to learn how to swim. Three of
the ones I remember offhand are the same as the ways to learn virtually
any other skill; one is unique.

The three generic ways are: read a blessed scroll of education and get
lucky, drink a blessed potion of education and get lucky, or get a wish
and use it on "swimming" (very wasteful!).

The unique way is much more likely to be accessible to you. If you give
a sufficient 'value' of potions of carrot juice to Blup, the baby water
dragon, he will teach you the basics of how to swim. One blessed potion
is usually enough, but if that isn't available, two or more non-blessed
potions - given *simultaneously*, i.e., in a stack rather than one at a
time - should also work.

Although you mention swimming specifically, its worth mentioning there's
another mechanism which is just as good: get the water breathing intrinsic
or equivalent. A water dragon corpse (adult or baby), helm of water
breathing, any one of three specific artifacts or some combination of
other items (ring of the fish, [item] of the sea).

Although unlikely, he could have two rings of fish or have a Blup corpse
(only 3% chance!) at this point in the game.

And since we're on the topic, I believe water breathing is the only
intrinsic which cannot be granted/removed by drinking from a pool...

Same deal with immunities.

In my experience, one blessed potion should *always* be enough.
I've never had this fail, with zillions of characters.

Also, there is the option of just wading through the river -- there is
usually a place where it is only one or two squares wide. Don't carry
scrolls or books across, and be warned that iron weapons and armour may
rust.

It might be wiser to just come back later, though.

Very well - I haven't tried it very often, since many of my characters
haven't had any blessed potions of carrot juice by that point (and the
ones who *do* have tended to want to save them for Perception increases).

I didn't mention that, because it appeared that the poster had already
tried that and found it to be infeasible with this particular river.

Frequently is.

And keep an eye on hp - low level characters, especially spellcasters, may
not be able to survive a wade across. Watch how much hp gets taken off each
time you drown, and if it's taking too much of a bite to get back give up
and come back. I believe (though I'm not sure on this or how much it
affects things) that being satiated or burdened increases your risks of
drowning, so drop a bunch of items and do some exercise before swimming
across.

Thanks for the info.

I guess its either the carrot juice or come back later. I'm sure though
that the puppy will be dead by the time I can get back, but at least
I'll still get to loot a vault.

just curious though, if I hadn't found out about it from here, where in
the game is there a hint as to giving the carrot juice to Blup? Does he
say something about it if you talk to him enough? All I got out of him
is that he's looking for his mother or some such thing.

Thanks again,

Please don't topquote (quoting above what you're replying to).
Especially when there's spoily information in what you write. Here on
r.g.r.adom there's a policy to leave spoiler space for people who do not
want to be spoiled, the topquoting ruins that initiative, and is in
general not considered The Way To Do It on Usenet. Please read the

You know, I thought this was true too. My last character that
attempted it did not learn to swim. :( And, for some odd reason,
carrot juice was rare in that game.
