As another poster said, the paint peels off easily. It's a significant
annoyance but not enough to make me regret it's purchase. My paint is
mostly intact -- but I use the zire 72 hard-case.
The only other 'bug' I've encountered is that twice so far I've noticed that
my palm wouldn't charge fully -- it would start at 95%... then 90%... then
less -- after hours of charging. Careful reading on palmone.com had me
looking at something called an "in-cradle reset". Great. No cradle with
the P72 -- what do I do? Simple -- just plug in the power and do a reset.
It worked. The next charge was full.
My 'guess' is that the charging circuit gets hosed and a 'reset' while
charging clears it.
I should also take the time to talk about some of the 'pluses'. Outside of
the basic palm apps, the included voice memo function is fantastic. The
microphone sensitivity is superb. I can record hours of audio if needed so
long as I have the storage space and battery charge. Longest recording
session was 3.5 hours -- and I still had about a 40% charge.
I get around 4 to 5 hours of continuous use on a full charge. That's about
my limit -- if it was much less, I'd be unhappy. If I'm watching video
(I've tried it -- it's not that great -- dont get this to watch video!), you
get only about 1 hour. I guess it takes some serious power to decode the
asf... The only major complaint here is that the battery isn't
user-changeable. I expect pdaparts.com or someone will have a how-two and a
battery available for the P72 sooner or later. When my warranty runs out,
I'll probably pursue that.
I never thought I'd NEED bluetooth -- I considered it a needless 'extra'. I
must admit, I enjoy the ease of connecting to my cell phone, wireless
syncing, and even accessing the internet (via cell or around the house).
I've also come to enjoy Audible as an extra. The P72 includes a free month
(two audio books). I tried it expecting to end it there, but I got hooked.

Yep, mine is peeling too. Si, if you want a brand new already peeled Zire72,
palmOne sell what it calls the Special Silver Edition. It's finish is what I'll
have after my blue paint finally all peels off...

There is a bug in the included security software. It drove me nuts for
awhile. All of a sudden, every morning my battery was stone dead. After much
hair-pulling I figured out that it was the security program. I can't
remember the specifics now, but I think I had set it to autolock at
midnight. Apparently the program keeps running until the battery dies.
I reported it to Palm but no response. I think they did finally publish
something about the problem in their knowledgebase, but no solution.
There are lots of complaints about the paint, and mine has chipped too but I
have it in a leather case so it is quite protected. The paint thing doesn't
bother me that much.
Other than that, I love the 72. I used to have a IIIx and the 72 is
astonishing by comparison.

Yep, thanks to all posters.
The blue paint problem was something that I was aware of...so it would be
the 72s for me...
Just got to decide whether to get the 72s or an Ipaq...

I would sometimes find my volume had been mysteriously set from Low to High.
It turns out that whenever you capture video (not stills), the app sets the
volume high and leaves it there. I reported it to Palm. No interest shown.

My guess is an "in-cradle reset" does battery calibration as well. The
graph "dead-reckons" the charge in some areas & an independant battery
monitoring circuit could stop the charging process while the graph has it
wrong (did it show the charging symbol in the graph at the time?). A problem
in some laptops when switching to another battery.

Doesn't do it on mine. The volume has always stayed where I put it when using
video, recorder, mp3s or any other sound using application. You might try a hard
reset (after a hotsync backup of course) and see if it still does it. Might just
be a 3rd party software conflict or corrupt file.
