Upgrading the CPU in a laptop

I have a DELL Inspiron 7000 with a 300MHZ PII MMC2 Mobile CPU. I was able to purchase a Mobile Celeron 466 MMC2 CPU, hoping I'd be able to upgrade. I installed the new CPU, and no luck. The system doesn't even start to POST. Some indicator LED's flash, the drives spin, there's a pause, then it repeats this pattern, indefinitely. When I put the original P300 CPU back in the system comes up fine.

I had the Celeron CPU replaced and the replacement behaves exactly the same way. Doesn't look like there's anything wrong with the new CPU.

Any ideas what could be happening? Any suggestions would be appreciated.

Upgrading ANYTHING in a laptop is extremely difficult- esp. something like a processor. In fact, i've never even heard of the possibility of upgrading a manufacturer's notebook processor. Now, a custom built- yeah. You might look into a BIOS upgrade. Also, installing a new processor requires different multiplier settings and voltage settings- most laptops don't give you the option of changing those things. It might not be possible.
