Hi,

somewhere around dungeon level 60, I collected about 5 artifacts. I recalled to
town, to sell some stuff and recharge my !oHealing, but had to left one there.
So I decided to let one sword, don't recall the name right now, but it was not
big deal.

After town shopping, I recalled to dungeon, same level, of course, and I looked
for that artifact in all places... no luck...

How is then "preserve mode" supposed to work? I thought it should be there,
somewhere...

E's can't crush artifacts, right? I so one E crushed one dungeon book...

And I remember, when I played v303 some time ago, I left a "cursed" artifact in
the dungeon, did the same town shopping, and when I recalled back to the level,
I couldn't find it...

Regards,

Leo

In preserve mode, it means the item will not be permanently lost if you
leave it on a level, but you have to wait for it to be randomly
generated again. It goes back into the pool, in other words.

If perserve is off, then the item would be lost forever and could not
be randomly generated again.

At least, that is my understanding of it.

Preserve mode means that if you leave an *unidentified* artifact on the
ground before leaving the level, then it will not be lost forever.
Seeing as you identified the artifact sword, unfortunately it's gone and
won't be generated again. Better hope its not Ringil or similar...

Hope it helped

"Preserve" mode does not remove artifacts from the game until they have
been identified (or *identified*). If you had collected the artifacts
(through noting that monsters would not destroy/pick them up, or
obvious ones such as the Phial) without identifying them, and then left
them on the ground and left the level, it is possible that they would
be found later in the game.

Note however that when you leave and return to a level, the level will
be completely regenerated; the layout, all monsters, items, tunnels,
etc left from your previous visit will be discarded. The sole
exception is the town level, where the layout is preserved (but again,
items and monsters are regenerated).

Some of the tk angband games had an option to preserve the level when
recalling back to town. AFAIK the tk interfaces were the only place
that functionality was found.

Thanks a lot to all answers.. this lisk rocks!

So, I was wrong in several things....

Just to confirm:

1. items either id'ed or *id*'ed won't be regenerated again.

2. if some artifact is generated or droped at level X, and I don't id'it, it
will be regenerated in some other level (I mean, I don't need to come back to
that same level?) What if monster picks it up, and I leave the level? same rule
apply? I havenit id'ed yet...

3. monsters can't destroy artifacts, right? by crushing them? I know artifact
are all (are they all?) inmune to elements, but a monster crushing one, as I
saw that E crushing the dungeon book (which was also "inmune to elements" )...?

Once more, thanks a lot,

Leo

Yes.

It can be generated again (it's not removed from the pool) as long as
you're playing in preserve mode. Monsters can't pick up artifacts in
vanilla.

artifact

Right - artifacts cannot be crushed or destroyed by a monster. Scrolls
of curse armor/weapon have a chance to destroy armor or weapons, armor
and weapons can be disenchanted, and leaving an identified artifact on
the ground and leaving the level or selling the artifact to a merchant
will remove the artifact from the pool of artifacts that can be
generated.

Yes.

It can still be regenerated, but there are no guarantees.

Monsters can't pick artifacts up.

Correct.

Artifacts are immune to the elements, but not everything that is
immune to the elements is an artifact.
