Is there anyway to "repair" the Gnome gui in RH8? I had just installed the appropriate nvidia drivers & Wine. After installing Half-Life, I was about to run the game but was prompted to change my screen resolution. I adjusted the screen resolution down from 32-bit to 16-bit @ 1024x768 (well within my monitors specs, btw), but then things went haywire. The RH8 gui crashed & left me at a command prompt. I have about 1 hour worth of Linux experience, so I'm basically saying I have no clue what to do to get the gui back. I tried typing startx at the cmd prompt, but all that happens is my monitor switches resolution, the screen tries to display the gui (it flashed briefly), then I get dumped back to the cmd prompt.

Can someone throw me a bone here?

Cheers,

Ron_Jeremy

I'd say your first port-of-call would be /usr/bin/redhat-config-xfree86

What benterp said. Also, when you configure it, make sure you specify multiple colour depths (8,16,32) and maybe resolutions (1024x768, and maybe 800x600) . I'm guessing it died because there was no "screen" for 16 bit colour.

Do I look like I care?
