Restoring laptop w/ w7

My brother wants me to restore his computer by re installing windows over it. He has a laptop with windows 7, and i have a windows 7 disc I got on amazon that did not come from his computer. Is it safe to re-install windows w7 on his computer and use his product key that he already had on his oem version.

best bet is to use the built in recovery partition if it has one

most laptops do

this way you are certain all the required drivers will be installed

how to get to the recovery partition depends who makes the laptop

for example acer press alt + f10 at start up

dell ctrl + f11

toshiba hold the zero key

etc
