Three recent presidents, influential members of the government and military are quoted on this site. This truly disturbs me. I am glad that they are all old and going to die soon. These people are a threat to my future and my childrens future. They are going to bring more war and death those around them. I am an agnostic/athiest, and I just want peace. I want people to care about eachother and have tolerance, and I want people to realize that no one is perfect and so therefore we shoudl all just give eachother a little respect and mind our own business, work on improving our own personal lives. But according to these people because of my wishes, I should be put to death.

That is a diverse group representing many different interest, good and bad. Some I admire, some I would not want to have any association with. All are men, some of the quotes are great, some honest, some bad wrong. All men including all of us have said stupid and wrong things at some time...but on the other hand I would agree with some of the quotes. The most objectionable thing I find in some of the quotes is I think they reflect a lack of compassion, pity, and love as reflected in the attitude of Christ and should be reflected by the folks whom he instructed that folks should know we are Christians by our love. Good list of quotes and a good list of people who are not well known outside of Christian circles. Some of these folks would not be recognized as representing Christians, for example the white supremist in the group.

I would also note that taken out of context, some of these quotes are sort of nebulous. There were some that if I were serious, I would want to question what they meant by certain things, not all words mean the same thing to the same people and "inside" Christian folks are guilty of practicing their own lingo as are computer geeks....

I really don't worry about the complete nuts. They are obvious. They have little credibility.

The ones I worry about are the ones preaching from some mainstream churches. Thinly veiled sermons that cover some of the same ground as these quotes. They are dangerous. People believe and follow them.

Atheists are not to be considered citizens ??? Woopsy....

I think they just went off the deep end past terrorist and called any American who does not kneel in church on Sunday a Terrorist.

My view on an Atheist is a person probably educated in proper science that takes neither a stance for or against religion. Mainly because science uncovers lots of things that cannot be explained on a logical level so the debate is still open.

Political leaders that HIDE behind religion when they are nothing better then outright butchers need to exit stage left before the masses take an axe to them instead of trying to digest the hypocrisies of what the leaders spew out of all their orifices.

Putting up a page of quotes taken out of context and comparing those quoted to the Taliban shows this persons true intelligence...in short, he is an idiot. And will no doubt attract more of the same.

I know that these people are extremists and that they dont represent the general population. Its the fact taht they have influential positions, thats the scary part, and thats why i posted them.

I know that the genearl public (which isi where you fall into) are generally good people. I live in Canada and we are practically identical to Americans the way we think and live, so whatever I say about you guys applies to myself as well. Just because I say somethign about your governmetn doesnt mean im insulting you.

As RichPLS said, the quotes probably werent portrayed with fairness in mind. We all say stupid things at times. But you have to admit... that these people are scary.

Now instead of flipping out, why dont you post your feelings? How do you feel that these people are representing you? Do you agree with their stance on homosexuality and non-Christians?

Yes after my initial shock ran out (that people coudl have so much hatred for no apparent reason other than because their faith requires them to) I do see that there are some reasonable quotes.

Like the one that says "you are either with us, or against us". Not alot of peolpe took kindly to this, but think about it. If you were walking down the street and you saw some guy run up to another person and start assaulting them, if you walk away and do nothing, you are just as guilty. Same idea. Take Canada for example.. not alot of Canadians wanted to be involved... but the USA would be there to defend Canada in a heart-beat. And therefore we should do the same for them. Now wheather or not the war was justified is another debate altogether, but lets just assume that it was.

Hmm.. were the Egyptian's not as busy as little hermit crabs moving 5 ton blocks around to build pyramids to their Gods 2000 years before that!!
Were the Inca's not charting the midnight sky's celestial body's around the same time and worshiping the sun the same way the Egyptians believed in Osiris their sun God.

Did a race or people called the Atlantians not evolve even before both cultures that had earth bound God like powers, not excluding the possibility that they in fact became extinct due to just those powers.

Did the Egyptian Queen Nephritis not live in a sea port town called Alexandria where once stood a Great Library initially started by Sea and land trade that filled with manuscripts and scrolls of mans great deeds and ability's 2000 years before the birth of Christ or even the remotest sign of the bibles presence. Sigh the Loss of the Great Library Of Alexandria due to a great fire.

It would seem after that all we had left was the prologue of 1 remaining thought or manuscript that might have survived the great fire of Alexandria and a bunch of good intentioned Monks got together 2000 years later and re scribed it into print as the Holy Bible. All in pieces chapters and verse as if it was once part of a much greater assemblage of material.

Mankind's history from the last 4000 years all his real secrets and power only shadows of what they once were left in the Bibles print enticing of their possibility yet devoid of real information aside from the dream that once was.

No they said they believe they found a piece of rock that could possibly have come from Mars that appears to have once had some very microscopic tubular cell structures that are now basically solidified into a carbon form due to the heat of entry through the earths atmosphere. Fossilized cells hardly possible due to the heat of re-entry and lack of the limited protein available in something so microscopic it must be viewed under an electron microscope.

Therefore they presume that a certain micro bacteria formed and solidified in a more suitable environment where liquid was available. To further solidify their claim that the rock was from Mars the Mars Rovers have proven that the means to support life on that planet has been available for millions of years.

That and the location of where the rock was found in Antarctica where a planetary object [debris] from Mars would most likely have a decaying orbit that would place an object onto the earth.

We could play some more Martian Baseball but I think you are out of your Field

Phial I don't think you should concede that the quotes were all out of context.

I'd like to see the context from which these quotes were taken then.

I don't normally post on these religious/political threads since they always turn into flame wars, but some of those quotes are downright scary. I tend towords the center, as there are things about both conservatives and liberals with which I both agree and disagree. The far left and far right both seem to be a bunch of lunatics, but the agenda of the far right scares me more.

Historically religious institutions have had an agenda of social control and redistribution of wealth from many to few, and I don't like that. I'm not saying I have a problem with the faith, it's the organizations I don't like. I also have a problem with any religion that says if you're not a member YOU'RE GOING TO HELL!!!!11!oneone (all the major religions say this in one way or another, so as you may have guessed, I'm not a big fan of organized religion).

I worked with a woman in her early thirties, she was a pharmacist and I had a college job as a pharmacy tech so I spent a lot of time interacting with her. She was raised in a very religious environment and followed the bible - err - religiously. I noticed that she was acting odd on a couple of occasions, so I asked her if she was OK. It turned out she had been married to a guy, who for several years had been physically and psychologically abusing her. He couldn't keep a job, but was telling her that he was going to make a bunch of money on the Internet, and never made a dime btw, in fact while married to him she had to sell her house and move into a trailer because of his debts, this while she made a salary around $80K US per year. He beat her up whenever he lost his temper, or just felt like it. I said to her, "You're husband is beating you? Why don't you just leave him?" Her answer was that it would be a sin to violate the sacrament of marriage. Not wanting to get too involved in a co-workers personal life, and also needing a little while to figure out what to do, I backed off and let it go. We talked briefly about it a few times over the next week or so, but she wouldn't budge. The next time I worked with her the same topic came up again. Except this time she told me that this guy had hit their 4 year old in anger (they also had a 2 year old, two girls). At this point I threw all manners out the window and told her, "What the fu<i></i>ck is wrong with you?!? You're married to an AS<i></i>SHOLE who beats you and your kids?!? GET OUT!!!" Even after this she still resisted, and wanted to try to save this marriage. She told me that I didn't understand because I don't go to church. I told her that you don't need to go to church on Sunday to know that you shouldn't beat up your wife, and you shouldn't beat up your kids.

She left him the next day, moved in with her mother, and ended up divorcing him (complete with stalking, restraining orders against him, and all kinds of fun). I have no regrets, and in fact I am proud for my role in breaking up their marriage.

I believe that personal ethics and taking responsibility for your life are more important than satisfying a set of conditions to get to heaven, as outlined in an archaic collection of stories (even though I agree that many of the moral lessons in religious scripture are valuable).

Don't hate us just because we resisted being ruled by a monarchy.

i don't have anything against the US resisting the commonwealth. "power to the people" is what i say. and the US was in the best position and had the best reason to become its own country. colonisation is a terribly F-ed up thing and england was at the head of it. with some of the worst killings in known history (so were the spanish)

so given the circumstances i think the US's indipendance was fantastic.

and i think NZ, Australia... should all leave the commonwealth some day, however the commonwealth is nothing mroe than a symbolic position now. we could leave at will without any fuss from any side.

Accept the good we try and do, for I believe even you see the good that comes from the U.S. outweighs the negative...

thats where opinions form the basis for disagreement. but i can see the US citizens good intentions behind what "i" consider to be negative. but that is an opinion. and one based soley on my geographical location. (just as you probably disagree with a lot of what the rest of the world does. that isn't any more or less correct than anyone elses opinions.)

As for good things about the US. their are plenty of them, a lot of things are good about it.the shear size of it for one means that for every one of our possible entertainment options you probably have 10.

The US as a geographical location to me is beautifull, i see a lot of great things on tv about it, things i wish to see for myself some day.... but politics, people, and landscapes are not all the same target.

i have no negative feelings towards the people or the land. i wish everyone the best. (which is why i voice my opinions :P )

Peace to you too. infact peace to everyone, (some day soon i hope)

It's interesting how the Taliban Wiped out the Opium crop by a massive number, and since the USA has been in Afghanistan, Opium production has increased by more than 30 Times! Who in there right mind would think our government isn't taking full advantage of the 600 billion dollar drug trade?

I would also note that taken out of context, some of these quotes are sort of nebulous.

Of course you can take almost any quote out of context and make it look silly.

However "God told me to" cannot be made more idiotic than it already is by taking it out of context. It scares me if people do thing because God told them to, especially when such people are powerful.

I'd like to see the context from which these quotes were taken then.

Well, you won't need too much trouble to figure out where and when the white supremacist was preaching...
Let's face it, those don't need to be in context. Someone who repeats the word fags, unless otherwise stated on a comedic purpose (and even then), is not someone who was being misinterpreted. That person's homophobic, period.
