Can anyone explain me please how to cope with monsters' mind
blasting/brain smashing attack - I am not sure how exactly it's called,
I mean the one which slows you down. I believe I have read recently in
this group that to be protected from it one needs to have legendary
saving throw - so the related question would be how to achieve that? I
was trying to max my WIS by trying on some amulets of Wisdom,
Gil-Galad, etc., but could get only to heroic level (WIS 180/210).
Anyway it is not possible for me to reshuffle my gear to increase WIS
without losing on CON or some important resistances...
Is it true then that against Morgoth (suppose I will have luck to face
him one day) and without perfect saving throw one needs to have speed
at lest +31 and be hasted to +41 or higher?
I am playing v3.0.5 warrior (clevel 50 maxdlevel 84) and so far paid
most of my attention to my CON, DEX, and STR stats (they are now
180/210, 180/190, 180/250, respectively).
I am fighting with Haradekket(Hurin) - Bard - Narya - =oSpeed(+12) -
Elessar(Weaponmastery) - Arkenstone - Isildur - Colannon - Thorin -
Thranduil - Fingolfin - Thror and have at home Calris (still cursed)
and Anarion. Far from being enough for the final battle, right? My
speed is +22 (or +26 if I wield Orome).

Thanks a lot, it sounds reassuring.

I am below 1200 hp at my maximum CON, just 1124 hp in fact, so he still
can kill me in a double mana storm. I understand that it's not likely
and all, but still... By the way, how exactly long does the effect of
brain smashing last?

Which stock of healing/banishment would you regard as sufficient?

Thanks, but it is a bit early to wish me luck with Morgoth, I still
have twelve uniques alive and some of them seem to be just bound not to
show up. My question was mostly theoretical
I also found this:
a Blade of Chaos of Fury (6d5) (+24,+16) (+1)
It increases your strength by 1. It increases your attack speed by
1.
It provides resistance to fear and chaos. It aggravates creatures
around you. It cannot be harmed by acid or fire.
- seems to be a kick-ass weapon, maybe I can use it in some way too.

Maybe easiest way to figure this out is to seach trough past winner post
using groups.google.com, suitable seach phrase can be something like: [V
Winner warrior healing
Or something like that. Most winners write how much and what they used
on final fight.

18/220 is the maximum effective wisdom for saving throw.
So you could only increase it by 1%.
> Is it true then that against Morgoth (suppose I will have luck to face

No.
First, 30 would be enough, not 31.
Second, you could take a little risk. If he casts brain smash, and you
are slowed, that doesn't mean that he gets an automatic double move -
he only gets a small chance for it. And if he gets another move,
he doesn't necessary choose his strongest attack.
Third, if you have enough hit points, you won't be killed even if
he gets the double move, and chooses to mana storm you.
Brain smash causes 96 damage on average (180 max).
Mana storm by Morgy does IIRC 555 on average (600 max).
So if you always stay at 780+ hit points, he can't kill you
with a combination of brain smash and mana storm.

He can't kill you immediately after casting brain smash.
He already casted this spell, and may get one other action if you are
unlucky, before you can react.
And then, it depends...
My last warrior winner was a hobbit. High saving throw, and a good
magic device skill. The one time i was slowed, i teleported him away.
A little bit of a risk.
With a lower magic device skill, you might prefer to teleport self,
and then use a scroll of destruction if you land near tough enemies.
Or you can even use destruction to finish the fight, if you HP are
critical.
> By the way, how exactly long does the effect of

5-8 turns at normal speed. Thats about 20 turns for high speed characters.
> Which stock of healing/banishment would you regard as sufficient?
I checked the numbers for some of my last winners. Comparable are one
warrior, two rogues, and one ranger that used melee.
Each of them used up 15-30 portions of heal, 5-6 potions of *heal*/life,
and 0-3 srcolls each of genocide/mass genocide (banishment/mass banishment).
I usually had 30-60 heal and 10 *heal*/life with me.
But note that these characters were back in V 2.9.x.
And i used the smart monsters options, which doubled spell casting
chance for intelligent monsters. So you might need less.

If I were you, I would use Calris (enchanted as far up as possible) to kill
Morgoth, and hope for Ringil anyway (but dont wait around). With 8 or so
scrolls of Banishment and MB, 10 each of Healing and *Healing* (or Life), and
some way to haste yourself, I think you could win no problem. In case you dont
know, DONT heal with Elessar if its a matter of life or death, since there's a
fail rate. Good Luck killing Morgoth!!!

Throw enough mana storms at a problem, and it will usually go away.

That's brain smash. It's nasty -- up to 200 damage, confusion, and
slowing. Confusion resistance stops the confusion; FA does *not* stop
the slowing. Legendary saving throw does completely prevent it. Heroic
saving throw just below the threshold for being Legendary does as well.
Heroic saving throw makes it rare for this attack to get through.
Due to unresistable slowing attacks like these and inertia and gravity,
it's best to have permanent speed to match any monster you're fighting
that has one or more such attacks, plus temp speed during such fights.
Saving throw is influenced by race, class, wisdom, and (I think) level.
Dwarf priests probably get the highest among race/class combinations.
Level 50 is always an asset in any fight. Equipment with + to wisdom and
maxing internal wisdom will help too. Maximum effective wisdom is 18/220
-- any more and there's no further effect on saving throw or anything
else save a bigger buffer against being stat drained to below 18/220.
(The same is true of all the stats, and many of them have no significant
benefits above 18/200.)
All of the above presumes vanilla. You don't say which variant you're
playing, but if it's not vanilla, YMMV.
> I was trying to max my WIS by trying on some amulets of Wisdom,

Heroic may be good enough -- 18/210 is nearly max effective wis. Were
you still being hit with brain smash when you had 18/210 wis? Even if
you were it should have happened only rarely.

+30, and haste +40, I'd recommend as a minimum. Otherwise he just might
get in a 200-damage attack and slow you in one shot, get a second move,
and nail you with something that might do up to 600 more damage. Unless
you can take 800 damage and survive to teleport out. (You will also "get
slowed" when haste wears off anyway, and although you won't eat 200
damage when that happens, haste wearing off doesn't consume one of
Morgoth's moves. Right after it wears off Morgy might get a double move
for up to 1200 damage if your unhasted speed is <30!)
This isn't to say people have won with under +30 permanent speed for
that fight. Some of them had invulnerability before mages got nerfed.
Some of them were lucky. Some of them might have been playing variants.

Warrior has hps to eat 800 damage. But probably not 1200. Unless you're
very good at anticipating speed pot running out and teleporting yourself
before it happens, I don't recommend less than 30 perm speed for facing
morgoth, especially if you haven't faced the big black P before in
Angband. At least we no longer need to worry you're discussing a variant
where your mileage may vary, now that you've disclosed you're playing
vanilla.

Fairly nice late game equipment. Speed footgear would be nice but isn't
dependable. (You do check the armour store and black market when in
town? Now that you have gobs of cash at least?) Keep an eye out for long
swords (4d5) and cubragol. Cubragol isn't all that hard to come by. You
are either pseudoing, identifying, or trying to destroy all crossbows
right? Keep an eye out for more speed rings as well. Im_fire is less
important than +30 speed in the final fight.

True. On the other hand, taking chances like this is bound to get you
killed eventually.

Unfortunately, he can still kill you with a combination of mana storm
and mana storm, unless you have unprecedented hp of at least 1200, if
your haste wears off and he promptly gets a double move.

I'd want a load of speed pots and a lot of teleport scrolls as well if I
were to attempt Morgy with less than +40 hasted, so if I did lose speed

True. On the other hand, taking chances like this is bound to get you
killed eventually.

Isn't it 200? Or was it nerfed slightly?

Unfortunately, he can still kill you with a combination of mana storm
and mana storm, unless you have unprecedented hp of at least 1200, if
your haste wears off and he promptly gets a double move.

I'd want a load of speed pots and a lot of teleport scrolls as well if I
were to attempt Morgy with less than +40 hasted, so if I did lose speed
and survived, I could haste back up or get out of dodge fast.
