Hi,

The last 3 Z 2.7.4b games that I have played (not counting those that
dead by 200') have all ended in a similar way.

They have all be knocked out in a single turn (please press space bar
until tombstone appears), all were on dl 50-55, All had Free action and
an AC >100. They were all pretty tough (1 even had 2 Archons and 3
Nightcrawlers in the kill list). Two of them were killed by the
Stormbringer.

Is there any defence against the single turn knock-out like this?
Because if there isn't doesn't it make the game virtually unwinnable?

You have probably met monsters you don't want to melee earlier.
green/ochre jellies for example. Same applies to Stormbringer.
Distance attack is best defence against melee knock-out. Heavy XBow of
extra might and good bolts, a wand of teleport away, or something else.

Deeper down you will meet a few monsters like the Destroyer you don't
want to fight at all. This does not make the game unwinnable - you don't
have to kill everything, just two monsters.

Don't melee the Stormbringer. Even with an AC of about 190, you have
5% chance each turn of being knocked out with at least a 64% chance
you'll never wake up.

Zangband has been won many times, and I'm sure nearly all the winners
killed the stormbringer

You need to see the Stormbringer coming and use Phase Door + bow or
other ranged attack to kill it. Avoid melee. Golems are immune to
stun.

I would agree that the instakill melee hit deal is really annoying and
should be removed, but for some reason it's still around.

I wonder, can you detect it with telepathy?

How do you determine if something can stun you? Is it if it can do more
than a certain amount of damage in a single blow or is there a
particular flag?

By the way, I've used to play and won Z2.7.1 and my play style tends
towards meleeing a lot. I don't ever recall being knocked out in
Z2.7.1. Did this instant knock-out exist in Z2.7.1 or is it a new
feature?

From what I understand, creatures stun you a little each time when they role
the higest possible value on one of their damage dice. Since the
StormBringer does only d1 damage dices, all it's damage points stun you.

Stormbringer has existed (and been an insta-kill in melee) since at least Z
2.2.8, which is the last version of Zangband I played.

Yes, you can detect The Stormbringer with telepathy.

I checked the source code for stunning to find out the chances of
insta-kill or stun when being hit by the Stormbringer and the results
are below. Stormbringer has 2 64d1 attacks.

If only 1 of its attacks hit
chance to stun 24%
chance to heavy stun 74%
chance to knock-out 2%

If both attacks hit
chance to heavy stun 3.5%
chance to knock-out 96.5%

I think the second lot of results speak for themselves.

BTW: Looking at the source code almost any creature can get a
knock-out, although for a small kobold it is many million to one.
