My crappy 80 GB sata Hard drive with my operating system, windows 7 Pro 64 bit, is failing and I just bought a western Digital 250GB sata and want to use my win 7 disc with the same product key and install it onto the new one. Can I use the same activation key that I already used once? If I can use the same product key, do I have to contact Microsoft at some point during the installation and then activation? Thank you for all responses.

Is an OEM copy or retail?

You can find more information in regards to the different versions of Windows 7 HERE.

If it's OEM, yes because you didn't change the motherboard.

Doesn't matter if it's OEM or not. If you just replace the hard drive, you can re-install and use the same license(key).
