This post is dedicated to all who have befallen the same fate. :->

Decided to try something different - an Animeband Sky Dragon Water
Magic Knight. The 'Water' part was my first mistake.

Looking very promising. Got up to clev 4, and was on my second trip
down, to 100' (no WoR in the shops, as usual when you can actually
afford them), and then I ran into a floating eye.

A floating eye! If you had heard only a quarter of what I have heard
of them, and I have heard very little of what there is to know, you
would be prepared for any kind of spectacular YASD. Sure enough,
instant paralyzation.

The problem was, that *even while paralyzed* (is this a bug?) I
managed to parry a good portion of it's attacks. Just enough to keep
me from dying! I wasn't going to get unparalyzed, so the only
solution was to lean on the space bar and hope I'd get tired! I was
seriously considering getting some blu-tak and putting it under the
space bar, and pick up a Beano annual or something.

Fortunately, after a while I began to get not tired, but hungry. The
solution was staring me right in the face - die a slow and painful
death, rather than the fast one that I couldn't get. It took about
five real-time minutes to die after I first got paralyzed! And the
biggest injustice was that my tombstone said 'Killed by starvation'.
I think it should say 'Killed by a floating eye and the stupid styles
system'!

What *is* it about the floating eyes in this variant? Once you get
next to one, you'll never get away. And I *did* have arrows, and I
*did* have a lantern, but it was just around a corner or something. I
never even saw it until it was too late.

Err...why are you playing 052? The floating eye bug was fixed quite a while
ago. I suggest trying the current stable release (0582), or if you're a brave
soul, the really wacky alpha. You can find it at
http://angband.oook.cz/animeband/

Did you have an AC of at least 10?

Why the spacebar!!! I'm not an expert with Anime052, so correct me if
I'm wrong, but surely this just rests, so if you do happen to get
unparalyzed with this held down you'll just rest again and get
reparalyzed on the next turn. Why not hold down a key which would move
you away from the floating eye (or attack it).

Generally, pressing spacebar just flushes messages and -more- prompts. It does
not take any action or cost you any energy.

Of course there is no formula for success except perhaps an unconditional
acceptance of the RNG and what it brings.

I think it was 20-something, actually. :-> It's just that there's no
escape from floating eyes in this version.

(Unless you found a really OOD ring of free action, of course. You
never know - just the other day Harriet told me she'd found a staff of
speed in Unangband at 200'!)

There was a time when floating eyes did 0 damage, and this sort of
death was *normal* ... about 10 years ago though.
