I am having a strange connectivity problem syncing a new Tungsten T3
via USB cradle.
It works fine for a while; then suddenly the PC stops recognising the
handheld when attempting the sync. The palm just sits there saying
'Connnecting with the desktop using Cradle/Cable', and after a while
times out and says 'A connection between your handheld computer and the
desktop could not be established...'.
Nothing at all happens on the PC. Needless to say, Hotsync manager is
still running, has Local USB enabled, etc.
Here is the stange thing:
Unplugging the cradle and connecting to another USB port fixes the
problem. For a while. Then the same thing happens again, and switching
back to the original port works again. It is as if the PC forgets that
the USB port exists or has anything plugged into it, until reminded
again! Unplugging and plugging back into the same port does NOT fix the
problem.
Stranger still: exactly the same thing happens on two different PCs,
using two different cradles. And I previously owned a Tungsten T which
never had this problem with either PC.
So this strongly implies a problem with he new T3 unit itself - but the
symptoms (switching port fixing the problem) seem to suggest the
problem is at the PC end!
Both PCs are running Windows XP; one is Hotsync Manager 4.0 / Desktop
4.1.2 (as shipped); the other is 4.1.4 (latest available at palm.com).
Any ideas?

I'm seeing something similar with my T3, but I'm using it with an iMac.
Resetting the T3 clears up the problem (haven't tried moving to a
different USB port, but will next time it happens). This just started
recently. It sounds like the same problem, but obviously if it is it's
on the Palm, not the computer.

I have seen this same problem on my PC. I do not have the problem with the
Palm anymore but occasionally I have it with a USB card reader. I believe
it's a problem with the USB software on Win XP. It's as if the USB ports go
into "sleep" mode and won't wake up until something is plugged into them
which appears to "wake-up" the port. You might try searching the Microsoft
win Xp support site.

Try switching power scheme (you'll get there through ScreenSaver control
panel) to Always On. Looks like the system turns the USB off after a
while of no communication to conserve energy.

Thanks for the tips, will try changing the power scheme.
In the meantime, I think I may have been premature in saying the same
problem happens under both versions of Palm Desktop. Since upgrading
one of the machines to 4.1.2, I don't think I have had any probems on
that PC.
Incidentally, in answer to one of the posts, resetting my handheld does
not fix the problem in my case.
I will do some further comparative tests and post a further update...

Final follow up:
Changing the system power scheme did not seem to help, nor installing
Palm Desktop 4.1.4.
However the power saving idea seems to have been on the right lines,
and I think the problem is now fixed.
I had to open the Device Manager (right click on My Computer -> System
Properties -> Hardware); open Universal Serial Bus Controllers; double
click USB Root Hub; Power Management tab; uncheck 'Allow the computer
to turn off this device to save power'.
Thanks for the various suggestions!
