Hi

I have a new Tungsten E which doesn't seem to like writing to SD cards - I
end up with corrupted file structures after a while.

I'm trying to make sure it isn't any 3rd party software I have installed,
which is hard as with only the supplied software there's not a lot to play
with...

One thing I do see consistently is that if I install Documents to Go and put a
native Word file on the card, then after a soft reset 'Card Info' doesn't
show the documents directory until I've launched Documents to Go.

Is this another sign that all is not well, or is this just some strange
property of Card Info? I don't have another TE to try this out on so I'd
be grateful if someone could let me know what they see...

Also, if I format a card it says it has 2 kb free. If I go into the launcher
and back into card info it says 4 kb, and stays at 4kb. Is this also normal?

I *do* have the mmc.prc patch installed.

Sorry for the bad news, but this problem is very common with TE. I've
read plenty reports of cards becoming read-only in TE, while working
perfectly in camreas, MP3 players and desktop card readers. You stumbled
across a card producer, whose cards TE doesn't like.
Try support forum on PalmOne's web, there should be some suggestions on
brands that work without problems. I can't help more, as I never had a TE.

Maybe - and I have a new one on order which the reviews on e-buyer say works
with Palms (assuming they haven't changed supplier since then...) I haven't
looked at the support forum; I'll try that.

But I see the same thing on two different cards; one "Bytestor" which
is reported as Sandisk, and one Lexar, reported as manufacturer
unknown. This makes me doubt that it's the card. The only thing in
common between the two cards is that they've both spent considerable
time in my camera, so maybe it's done something nasty to the low level
structure.

My T|E has never had a problem with SanDisk, FWIW.

Most of the problems with Sandisk cards I remember hearing about were
them being very slow, rather than not working at all.

I've now seen somebody say that Launcher III was causing them card
problems, so (fingers crossed) maybe that was the cause of the corrupt
file systems for some bizarre reason.

(Doesn't explain the vanishing "documents" directory and phantom
increasing kb used values, since they appear with with no software
installed, but maybe they are just 'features' of Card Info)

You might try looking for an SDIO driver update for TE. On OS4 it
enabled 64+MB cards, that were'n previously formattable.

There is one; mmc.prc. I have it installed and still have problems :(.

Mine will not handle the 512 Panosonic that I acquired. Don't know if
its the card or some combination of 3rd party stuff, a glitch in the OS,
or what. I'm too cheap to try more 512 cards until I have an alternate
use for such a card. When I use it to shuffle data from a PC to a PC, I
reformat it to go in the Palm. The Palm does fine up to 256 but will
corrupt the file table if I violate that apparent ceiling, so I just
accept it and go on. A couple of 256 cards hold just as much data and
only audio files are in that category for me. That ability is not
critical to my continuing to use the unit.

I've read that a bunch of T|E users have not had any problems. If you've
updated the driver and such, maybe you've ended up with a cousin of my
unit:)

I would be curious if you have Filz...
mine indicates for Card 0: Version 1, a creation date of 07-31-03, and a
ROM size of 16646144 bytes with RAM Size of 32309248

I'm not sure how minor variances would be interpreted but if there were a
correlation, it might be worth knowing (like when I get ready to put a
new unit into service... after 18 months of heavy usage, my digitizer is
starting to give me a few problems - like others have written about). I
would like discovering a way to check for large card capabilities without
scrambling a card full of data.

So, maybe this will interest enough readers to check with their file
manager and post their findings and whether they fare well or ill with
the large cards.

I have 32M, 64M, 128M, 256M, 512M, and 1G cards. All work fine on my TE.

That's identical to what mine shows.

If it's *one* card causing you grief it's likely the card. The only thing I can
think of is to reformat the card and try again.

If *many* cards are a problem, try a hard reset and then load one program at a
time to find the possible 3rd party culprit. (Course you have to reload the
patch and soft reset to make it work.) I did have a problem with my TE writing
double folders to the card when I was using the reader TiBR PRo. But it went
away when I got rid of Launcher III and TiBR Pro has been working fine ever
since. That took me some time to find, so be patient and try stuff like that.
Good Luck...

I was going to suggest that probably all TE's have exactly the same details;
I've not heard of there being different ROM versions.

But mine gives a creation date of 8/25/03. All the other details are
the same though.

My problem also seems to have been Launcher III. I suspected it a few
days back, and removed it. Since then I have had no problems at all. I
just tried re-installing it, and got corrupted file structures
straight away. FWIW, the corruption seems to occur following a soft
reset. Since it tends to be the PALM directory that gets doubled, my
guess is that the FAT is read incorrectly and it looks as if there's
no PALM directory, so another one gets added, messing up the FAT.

In a few minutes of experimenting with this I managed to screw things up
so badly that the card refused to format. Fortunately a low level format
using Card Export and a PC utility seems to have fixed things.

The moral of all this is that even an application that has nothing to
do with SD cards can screw them up badly, something that I wouldn't
have guessed.
