Greetings All,

My clvl 29 warrior just had a wild ride @ 1200' in a hexagon shaped
vault with a Ancient Gold Dragon (burned 3 ! of healing with that one)
and picked up:

Cloak of Thorongil [1,+10]
Spear of Nimloth (1d6) (+11,+13) (+3)
Beaked Axe of Theoden (2d6) (+8,+10) (+3)
Double Chainmail of Resistance (-2) [16,+13]

The Axe gives +3 to WIS & CON, dragonslayer, slows metabolism,
Telepathy and Drain life every 40 turns.....( I thought this one was
better that the spear, even tho the spear gives a +3 to speed) um....I
found out real quick what Telepathy was...very nice....but what is
drain life? Dose it, when activitated take hp away from your opponent
and give it to you or what?

BTW---on this vault, there were four areas at the corners outside the
vault that had stuff and baddies in them, but they had permenent rock
all the way around....how dose one get into this? Or is this a glitch
just to piss me off?

Thanks for the help!

!Heal is too valuable to waste on non-uniques in that quantity. Save it
for mistakes, surprises, and for dangerous battles that you absolutely
must fight.

You are better off teleporting the seriously OOD monsters and getting
the loot. You will be facing tons of situations like this at 2000'+,
and will have no choice but to run from many of them.

Use this for melee; it will give you more blows and a lot more damage
until much later in stat gain. The extra blow is more important than
the CON. Wear a ring if you need CON. The extra blow will still make
up for more than losing RoDamage. And at 1200', the extra speed counts
as that much extra damage. (EG: +3 speed means 30% more damage than
normal speed.)

> Beaked Axe of Theoden (2d6) (+8,+10) (+3)
Use this as a swap for wandering around, and for getting the first big
shot in with Drain Life.

A warrior should always head for using as few healing potions as possible, as
they may be of great essence later. Of course the ultimate aim is to stay
alive, but at this stage a usual warrior can kill such a dragon, despite it's
being a lot OOD, just by using some phase door scrolls intelligently enough,
even in a vault. You are a lot more likely to get more phase door scrolls than
more healing potions... in fact, a warrior can solve whole game without using
any normal healing potions at all (some *healing* and life against Morgy is
likely to be needed, but nothing aparts from that), they are just kind of
extra-powerful ccw. Of course, the fact he needs no healing potions later on
either kind of justifies the use of 3 here.

check the vault.txt of lib\edit directory to see if it really was so... have a
close look @ the area... if it is really unreachable, there probably is a
mistake there.

Hurts living things, but doesn't give you any HP.

Hi Paul,

Did you already download the updated spoiler files? In obj-good.spo, all
activations are described in detail. Further below is a quick cut and
paste of the entry on drain life.

From your description, I guess you were in the Mirrored Quartet greater
vault. The four corners of this vault all have one grid with
non-permanent wall. You'll have to dig in a diagonal direction for it,
though - this makes it quite easy to miss the correct spot when
inspecting the walls.

BTW, you can check out the design if this and other vaults in the file
vault.txt, which is included in the \lib\edit directory of your Angband
home directory.

The entry for drain life from the obj-good.spo spoiler file follows
below the spoiler warning.

(warning - spoiler information below)

Activation: drain life (n)
Description: Inflicts n points of damage on a single monster that is
not undead, a demon, an elemental, a golem, or a vortex.
