[Pos] Sorry, no more Pos

Hi all.

It looks that I have to make this announcement. I know that some folks
were waiting for the new version of PosBand since October 2004. Well,
I'm not working on it anymore.

I'm really sorry. And I hope you'll understand me. I worked
(intermittently) on Pos until about April. Then, I noticed that I was
making little progress. I decided to take a break. I was graduating
from the school and entering the university, and I had all kinds of
exams, so I didn't really have much time for Pos anyway.

But they are over now, it's August and I still can't continue the work.
I did a few bits, polishing some docs, but I didn't touch the source.
And, the worst part is, I've realized -- I don't really want to do it
anymore.

Why did I begin Pos at first place? I liked Angband, and wanted to play
with the source. I picked a few ideas and began implementing them. But
the "creative" part is finished. The source is more or less
completed -- with a few long-standing bugs and some far-fetched TODO
items that don't really belong to Pos at all. What remains is the
boring part, implementing all monster races. There are about 650 of
them. Each one needs careful balancing and testing. After 1.5 years,
still only about a quarter is complete.

Moreover, Pos never was a popular variant. There was a short peak
during the recent competition, but it never attracted as much attention
as NPP or OAngband do. Actually, I am happy with it -- there are
enough fans to feel that my work was appreciated. But I don't think
that many people will be disappointed if I give up.

Last but not least, I probably won't have time for Pos anyway, with
both the university and the job.

"Work-in-progress" version of PosBand 0.9.9 is available at:

http://posband.earthsea.org/posband/posband-0.9.9-WIP.tar.bz2

(I can't make a Windows build. Something odd happened to my Windows;
it doesn't boot and doesn't bluescreen, and I can't reinstall it at the
moment. Maybe I'll upload Windows version later.)

Hi Alexander,

I am sorry too. And yes, I understand - but I do regret that you make
this choice. But then, it's your free time, so you just do what you feel
is right.

Many thanks for the effort you have taken to create PosBand. I think it
is a great variant, because of the enormous choice of monster races that
you can play. I've really enjoyed playing a big pulsating pile of flesh
setting out to destroy Morgoth. <g>
Many of the monster races are just so much fun to play - great as a
diversion in between sessions playing a more serious variant.

Just to let you know - I am. I don't write this to try to change your
mind about your decision, but to let you know that I appreciate your
work and was looking forward to the next release.

If anyone makes a windows build, I'll certainly download and play it. If
not, I'll just keep enjoying the 0.3.0 version I now have. (Am I correct
that 0.3.0-alpha2 was the last released version?)

Once more: thank you, Alexander!

Best, Hugo

My thanks as well. Having played it from the first available alpha, I
enjoyed it immensely. I am very sorry to see it go away.

I'm disappointed as well, but well-understand the circumstances.

I will play it as well. Perhaps someone else will pick up the project
in the future.

Seconded!

I have enjoyed playing Pos. Thank you for the work you have done.

And thank you for the announcement. It is much better than just
disappearing and keeping us all wondering what happened.

I am sorry to hear that.

You should be happy with it. :) I think of Pos as a pretty widely respected variant, especially for one that was still being developed. As far as I can tell, NPPAngband version 0.1.x wasn't played by more than a half dozen people. The 0.2.x series got a bit more attention, but it died off after a couple months. It wasn't until the 0.3.x series, and over a year of heavy programming, that NPP got steady play. I think attention to the variants always peaks a couple months after a recent release. I hope somebody decides to pick up Pos and continue work on it.

Best of luck to you with your classes & job.

Not to mention remarkably creative and great fun. I will certainly
still play it. That said, I think the main reason for creating and
maintaining a variant is your own satisfaction; if that's no longer
there, then that looks to me like the right decision.

So long and thanks for all the, umm, water elementals.

Nick.
